Obese children more vulnerable to food advertising

ScienceDaily (Nov. 30, 2012) ? Rates of childhood obesity have tripled in the past 30 years, and food marketing has been implicated as one factor contributing to this trend. Every year, companies spend more than $10 billion in the US marketing their food and beverages to children; 98% of the food products advertised to children on television are high in fat, sugar, or sodium. In a new study scheduled for publication in The Journal of Pediatrics, researchers used neuroimaging to study the effects of food logos on obese and healthy weight children.

Amanda S. Bruce, PhD, and colleagues from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and the University of Kansas Medical Center assessed 10 healthy weight and 10 obese children, ages 10-14 years, using both self-reported measures of self-control and functional magnetic resonance imaging, which uses blood flow as a measure of brain activity. Dr. Bruce states, ?We were interested in how brain responses to food logos would differ between obese and healthy weight children.? The children were shown 60 food logos and 60 nonfood logos, and functional magnetic resonance imaging scans indicated which sections of the brain reacted to the familiar logos being shown.

Obese children showed greater activation in some reward regions of the brain than healthy weight children when shown the food logos. Healthy weight children showed greater brain activation in regions of the brain associated with self-control, when shown food versus nonfood logos. Overall, healthy weight children self-reported more self-control than the obese children. This adds to the body of research showing that in certain situations, healthy weight individuals experience greater activation of control regions of the brain than obese individuals.

?This study provides preliminary evidence that obese children may be more vulnerable to the effects of food advertising. One of the keys to improving health-related decision-making may be found in the ability to improve self-control,? notes Dr. Bruce. Self-control training may be a beneficial addition to obesity and behavioral health interventions, and may lead to greater success in weight loss.

'Call of Duty: Black Ops 2' on the Wii U: The good, the bad and the weird

1 hr.

Black Ops 2?will likely be one of the most purchased and played games of 2012, and it?s one of the games I was most keen on testing with the Wii U. Nintendo systems have never been home to this sort of hardcore game, and previous?Call of Duty?titles on Nintendo?s systems have been low-resolution shadows of the ?real? game the majority of the audience was playing. The Wii U version ofBlack Ops 2?changes things.

The game looks almost identical to the 360 version, with all the high definition bells and whistles.Black Ops 2?on the Wii U doesn?t feel like a hacked-down version of the game, made to play on a system on which it doesn?t belong. The Wii U version of the game also has a few tricks up its sleeve that can?t be replicated by any of the competing systems.

There are also some downsides to playing the game on the Wii U.

What?was given up

It?s hard to make any judgments about the Wii U?s relative power, or lack of power, from launch games. Nintendo has been tight-lipped when it comes to explaining what?s actually inside the Wii U, and we have no way of knowing how much time developers had to work with the system before launch. Long load times are common on new system launch titles, and they?re certainly on display on most launch Wii U games. The question isn?t whether these problems exist, it?s whether they can be fixed in future games, after developers learn their way around the architecture.

So where do you feel the first-gen-ness of?Black Ops 2? In the game?s frame rate. The frame rate takes a hit any time there are many things going on in one scene, and it?s something that?s actively distracting during play. It?s never a deal breaker, and the game is always playable, but the inconsistent performance is jarring after coming from the beauty of the PC version or the rock-solid frame rate of the 360 version.

So the question is whether these issues are the result of a truncated development cycle or weakness in the hardware itself. It will likely be a decent amount of time before we get an answer to the question. Considering Nintendo was working on the system?s online functions right up to launch it?s amazing that?Black Ops 2?includes multiplayer at all, much less the impressive suite of options on display in the Wii U version.

Fans of the series have likely already purchased?Black Ops 2?before the Wii U was released, however, and the amount of players online is shockingly low. As of this writing (which is admittedly 2 p.m. on a Tuesday) there are under 350 players on the servers.

The really good news is that most of them have been pretty easy to kill so far.

Using the gamepad

The inconsistent frame rate is the bad news, so what?s the good news? You can play the entirety of the game using the GamePad?s screen instead of your television, and the display is more than adequate to enjoy the game and its impressive graphics. I?m tempted to simply buy another power cable to place in my bedroom, because I often move the Wii U to my nightstand, without connecting the sensor bar or an HDMI cable, and play games in bed using only the GamePad and a set of headphones.

Enjoying a console-quality?Call of Duty?game while my wife watches?Suburgatory?on the television is pretty great. The weird downside? The rumble effect is?loud, especially if you?re playing the game while listening to the sound coming through the GamePad?s speakers.

That?s just a standard Wii U feature though.?Black Ops 2?takes it a bit further by allowing two players to play the same copy of the game. You can go online and have one player in the room using the television with the Wii U Pro controller, and the other player can play with their own screen by looking at the GamePad. It?s like a mini-LAN party with a single console and copy of the game, and it works very well. My friend and I spent around an hour playing the Zombies game mode cooperatively, each of us having our own screen, and talking our way through each situation.

There are a few graphical shortcuts here to get the Wii U to pump out two sessions of the game at the same time, but they?re minor. The frame rate holds up well for the most part, the lighting effects are less impressive than the single-screen version of the game, but that?s basically all the concessions made to allow the system to do this magic trick.

?This mode - indeed, split-screen in general - is not without its trades,??Eurogamer?s in-depth look at the game?s performance stated. ?Frame-rate definitely takes a hit (which varies according to the map and definitely muddies controller response), but resolution is maintained and the only noticeable visual downgrade comes from the removal of dynamic shadows. Even this isn?t quite as impactful as it sounds as shadows ?baked? into the environments are still there.? Considering this is a first-generation game, and?Black Ops 2?is the first game to offer this sort of multiplayer function on the Wii U, the game is very playable in this state. We can only hope co-op games played on the television and the GamePad increase in performance as developers learn how to optimize the Wii U, or even use the hardware as the target platform.

This isn?t split-screen, it?s something much better. Once both players get their own screen the game becomes much more enjoyable, and since both of you don?t have to stare at the television you can stretch out and relax. It?s an easy-going, very social way to play multiplayer games of?Black Ops 2, and teaming up with a buddy in the same room allows you to mop up other players in multiplayer pretty efficiently.

There are some oddities here, however. The GamePad can be made the game?s primary display when you first begin play, but the game won?t allow you to play with a friend using the TV with this option engaged. Unfortunately, I couldn?t find a way to switch?back?once I had enable GamePad play. It?s confusing, and if there?s a solution that doesn?t involve rebooting the game and not hitting the ?display? button on the controller, I?d love to hear it.

These UI and performance hiccups could very well be fixed in future releases, but as a first pass this is very solid take on?Black Ops 2. The multiplayer modes using both the TV and the GamePad are what make the Wii U special. I can invite a friend over to play, we both get to have our own screen that?s comfortable to use, and we can either play the competitive multiplayer or work together to take out some zombies. The graphical trade-off is minimal, and it feels like you?re enjoying a micro-LAN party. I can actually see myself going online to play this way with friends fairly regularly, despite the small amount of players online.

Should we be worried about the Wii U?

It depends on your expectations for the system. Nintendo doesn?t like talking about power in detail, but it looks like the system is just about as powerful as the 360. What?s clear is that developers have yet to be able match the performance of current generation systems at launch. That could be bad news for the future, or it could be that performance will improve with time. What?s clear is that the Wii U is not?more?powerful than current-generation systems, or at least that power hasn?t been easily tapped for the current stock of games out for the hardware.

Consoles offering split-screen multiplayer are nothing new, but the Wii U is able to put both versions of the game on different screens, and that?s a large selling point for social gamers or those who like to play with their friends in the same room. You give up some frame-rate, but the ability to use that extra screen with a buddy may be worth the trade-off.

!st year MA-HRHR Student Experience thus far, August to November ...

My name is Pao Kue, I'm a first year MA-HRIR student at the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management. There are approximately 70 of us first year and 70 second year students in the full time program. There are also about 100 part time students in the program. The cohorts are very friendly, everyone tries to leverage each other; from giving interview tips, sharing information in class projects, or even providing emotional support. Everyone tries to enjoy their two years together knowing that we will all be colleagues for years to come. ? The diversity of the program is amazing, many of us are from out of state or born in another country (me included)!

Coming straight from my undergraduate with no corporate experience, I was a bit worried about finding an internship. An internship during the summer gives us valuable work experience and can lead to a full time offer at end of the program. This year, about half the student population will have an internship offer before the Thanksgiving break, just 4 months into the 2 year program.

Companies that have recruited fellow cohort members include Chevron, Yum Brands, Microsoft, and Exxon Mobil to name a few. Knowing the high skill set that many of my cohort members have because of their work experience, I decided to enhance my internship possibilities by recruiting by searching online and outside the Graduate Business Career Center (GBCC) as well as taking advantage of the GBCC programs and assistance. I had a number of 1st round interviews and some 2nd round interviews, 2nd round interviews included flying out-of-state to company headquarters. Luckily, everything was paid for by the recruiting companies when I traveled. My offers were disclosed 2 weeks ago. Many fellow cohort members received their offers and the news was celebrated.

Along with the grueling interview process, most full time first year students are managing 12 graduate credits in Staffing, Training and Development, Business Principles for the HR Professional, and Using Data Metrics and HR. The average is 12 credits, but students can take as many as 17 credits per semester. Because of opportunities to study abroad in the spring of 2014, number of students, myself included, are taking 16 credits this semester. The extra two courses include International HR Management and Personnel Economics.

My courses in Staffing, Business Principles, Data Metrics (statistics), International HR, and Personnel Economics have all helped me in during my interviews when I was asked to review case studies. It's amazing how one can learn so much in a short amount of time and apply it to real HR scenarios during interview case studies!

All in all, my experience at the Carlson School has been most interesting. Working 10 hours a week (others work as many as 30), balancing 16 credits, maintaining a social life, I'm also proud to say that my extracurricular activities with bible study, University of Minnesota student fee committee, and acting has not dwindled!

Being a part of this program has given me the internal and external support to learn how to manage my time, build skills and prioritize. It's been truly a challenge thus far but a challenge that has already and will continue to develop me in the long run. Without the University of Minnesota MA-HRIR program, faculty, and current cohort members, I wouldn't have grown as much as I already have in the past 4 months. ?

This is my personal experience at the U so far as a 1st year MA-HRIR graduate student. I look forward to more opportunities and courses MA-HRIR will provide!

Amid Hurricane Sandy, a Race to Get a Liver Transplant

It was the best possible news, at the worst possible time.

The phone call from the hospital brought the message that Dolores and Vin Dreeland had long hoped for, ever since their daughter Natalia, 4, had been put on the waiting list for a liver transplant. The time had come.

They bundled her into the car for the 50-mile trip from their home in Long Valley, N.J., to NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children?s Hospital in Manhattan. But it soon seemed that this chance to save Natalia?s life might be just out of reach.

The date was Sunday, Oct. 28, and Hurricane Sandy, the worst storm to hit the East Coast in decades, was bearing down on New York. Airports and bridges would soon close, but the donated organ was in Nevada, five hours away. The time window in which a plane carrying the liver would be able to land in the region was rapidly closing.

In a hospital room, Natalia watched cartoons. Her parents watched the clock, and the weather. ?Our anxiety was through the roof,? Mrs. Dreeland said. ?It just made your stomach into knots.?

The Dreelands, who are in their 60s, became Natalia?s foster parents in 2008 when she was 7 months old, and adopted her just before she turned 2. They have another adopted daughter, Dorothy Jane, who is 17.

Natalia is a ?smart little cookie? who loves school and dressing up Alice, her favorite doll, her mother said. At age 3, Natalia used the word ?discombobulated? correctly, Mr. Dreeland said.

Natalia?s health problems date back several years. Her gallbladder was taken out in 2010, and about half her liver was removed in 2011. The underlying problem was a rare disease, Langerhans cell histiocytosis. It causes a tremendous overgrowth of a type of cell in the immune system and can damage organs. Drugs can sometimes keep it in check, but they did not work for Natalia.

In her case, the disease struck the bile ducts, which led to progressive liver damage. ?She would have eventually gone into liver failure,? said Dr. Nadia Ovchinsky, a pediatric liver transplant specialist at NewYork-Presbyterian. ?And she demonstrated some signs of early liver failure.?

The only hope was a transplant.

Dr. Tomoaki Kato, Natalia?s surgeon, knew that the liver in Nevada was a perfect match for Natalia in the two criteria that matter most: blood type and size. The deceased donor was 2 years old, and though Natalia is nearly 5, she is small for her age. Scar tissue from her previous operations would have made it very difficult to fit a larger organ into her abdomen.

Though Dr. Kato had considered transplanting part of an adult liver into Natalia, a complete organ from a child would be far better for her. But healthy organs from small children do not often become available, Dr. Kato said. This was a rare opportunity, and he was determined to seize it.

But as the day wore on, the odds for Natalia grew slimmer. The operation in Nevada to remove the liver was delayed several times.

At many hospitals, surgery to remove donor organs is done at the end of the day, after all regularly scheduled operations. The Nevada hospital had a busy surgical schedule that day, made worse by a trauma case that took priority.

At the hospital in New York, Tod Brown, an organ procurement coordinator, had alerted a charter air carrier that a flight from Nevada might be needed. That company in turn contacted West Coast carriers to pick up the donated liver and fly it to New York.

Initially, two carriers agreed, but then backed out. Several other charter companies also declined.

Mr. Brown told Dr. Kato that they might have to decline the organ. Dr. Kato, soft-spoken but relentless, said, ?Find somebody who can fly.?

Dr. Kato used to work in Miami, where pilots found ways to bypass hurricanes to deliver organs. Even during Hurricane Katrina, his hospital performed transplants.

?I asked the transplant coordinators to just keep pushing,? he said.

Mr. Brown said, ?Dr. Kato knew he was going to get that organ, one way or another.?

As the trajectory of the storm became clearer, one of the West Coast charter companies agreed to attempt the flight. The plan was to land at the airport in Teterboro, N.J. The backup was Newark airport, and the second backup was Albany, from where an ambulance would finish the trip.

The timing was critical: organs deteriorate outside the body, and ideally a liver should be transplanted within 12 hours of being removed.

Early Monday, as the storm whirled offshore, the plane landed at Teterboro. Soon a nurse rushed to tell the Dreelands that she had just seen an ambulance with lights and sirens screech up to the hospital. Someone had jumped out carrying a container.

At about 5 a.m., the couple kissed Natalia and saw her wheeled off to the operating room.

Three weeks later, she is back home, on the mend. The complicated regimen of drugs that transplant patients need is tough on a child, but she is getting through it, her father said.

Recently, Mr. Dreeland said, he found himself weeping uncontrollably during a church service for the family of the child who had died. ?Their child gave my child life,? he said.

Though only time will tell, because the histiocytosis appeared limited to Natalia?s bile ducts and had not affected other organs, her doctors say there is a good chance that the transplant has cured her.

Correction: November 28, 2012

Because of an editing error, a picture caption with an article on Tuesday about a girl who received a liver transplant during Hurricane Sandy misspelled the surname of the girl?s family. As the article correctly noted, it is Dreeland, not Vreeland.

Palestinians certain to win recognition as a state

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? The Palestinians are certain to win U.N. recognition as a state Thursday in a General Assembly vote that Israel and the United States warn could delay hopes of achieving an independent Palestinian homeland through peace talks with Israel.

The United States, Israel's closest ally, mounted an aggressive campaign to head off the General Assembly vote, which the Palestinians view as a historic step in their quest for global recognition.

With most of the 193 General Assembly member states sympathetic to the Palestinians, the vote is certain to succeed. Several key countries, including France, have recently announced they would support the move to elevate the Palestinians from the status of U.N. observer to nonmember observer state. However, a country's vote in favor of the status change does not automatically imply its individual recognition of a Palestine state, something that must be done bilaterally.

The Palestinians say they need U.N. recognition of a Palestinian state in the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem, the lands Israel captured in 1967, to be able to resume negotiations with Israel. The non-member observer state status could also open the way for possible war crimes charges against the Jewish state at the International Criminal Court.

In a last-ditch move Wednesday, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State William Burns made a personal appeal to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas promising that President Barack Obama would re-engage as a mediator in 2013 if Abbas abandoned the effort to seek statehood. But the Palestinian leader refused, said Abbas aide Saeb Erekat.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Thursday the recognition of an independent state of Palestine in the U.N. General Assembly will not advance the Palestinians' quest for a homeland. He said the Palestinians will not win a state until they recognize Israel as the Jewish homeland, declare an end to their conflict with the Jewish state and agree to security arrangements that protect Israel.

For Abbas, the U.N. bid is crucial if he wants to maintain his leadership and relevance, especially following the recent conflict between his Hamas rivals in Gaza and Israel. The conflict saw the Islamic militant group claim victory and raise its standing in the Arab world, while Abbas' Fatah movement was sidelined and marginalized.

The Palestinians chose the "International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People" for the vote. Before it takes place, there will be a morning of speeches by supporters focusing on the rights of the Palestinians. Abbas is scheduled to speak at that meeting, and again in the afternoon when he will present the case for Palestinian statehood in the General Assembly.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned Wednesday that the U.N. vote will not fulfill the goal of independent Palestinian and Israeli states living side by side in peace, which the U.S. strongly supports because that requires direct negotiations.

"We need an environment conducive to that," she told reporters in Washington. "And we've urged both parties to refrain from actions that might in any way make a return to meaningful negotiations that focus on getting to a resolution more difficult."

The U.S. Congress has threatened financial sanctions if the Palestinians improve their status at the United Nations.

Ahead of the vote, Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch filed an amendment to a defense bill Wednesday that would eliminate funding for the United Nations if the General Assembly changes Palestine's status.

"Increasing the Palestinians' role in the United Nations is absolutely the wrong approach, especially in light of recent military developments in the Middle East," he said in a statement. "Israel is one of America's closest allies, and any movement to strengthen one of its fiercest enemies must not be tolerated."

Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev said that by going to the U.N., the Palestinians violate "both the spirit and the word of signed agreements to solve issues through negotiations," which broke down four years ago.

But Israeli officials appeared to back away from threats of drastic measures if the Palestinians get U.N. approval, with officials suggesting the government would take steps only if the Palestinians use their new status to act against Israel.

Regev, meanwhile, affirmed that Israel is willing to resume talks without preconditions.

U.N. diplomats said they will be listening closely to Abbas' speech to the General Assembly on Thursday afternoon before the vote to see if he makes an offer of fresh negotiations with no strings, which could lead to new talks. The Palestinians have been demanding a freeze on Israeli settlements as a precondition.

As a sign of the importance Israel attaches to the vote, Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman flew to New York and was scheduled to meet Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon before the vote. Israel's U.N. Ambassador Ron Prosor had been scheduled to speak in the General Assembly after Abbas, but it appears Lieberman may now make Israel's case opposing the resolution.

Unlike the Security Council, there are no vetoes in the General Assembly. The world body is dominated by countries sympathetic to the Palestinian cause and the resolution to raise its status from an observer to a nonmember observer state only requires a majority vote for approval. To date, 132 countries ? over two-thirds of the U.N. member states ? have recognized the state of Palestine.

The Palestinians have been courting Western nations, especially the Europeans, seen as critical to enhancing their international standing. A number have announced they will vote "yes" including France, Spain, Norway, Denmark and Switzerland. Those opposed or abstaining include the U.S., Israel, Germany, Canada, the Netherlands and Australia.

A high vote could boost Abbas' standing.

"If there is a poor turnout, a poor vote, the radicals gain," said India's U.N. Ambassador Hardeep Singh Puri.

The Palestinians turned to the General Assembly after the United States announced it would veto their bid last fall for full U.N. membership until there is a peace deal with Israel.

Following last year's move by the Palestinians to join the U.N. cultural agency UNESCO, the United States withheld funds from the organization, which amount to 22 percent of its budget. The U.S. also withheld money from the Palestinians.

Plant's Cry For Help Attracts The Wrong Crowd

A simple white butterfly caterpillar (Pieris rapae) nibbles blissfully on a cabbage leaf, completely unaware of the complex interspecies interactions he has just set in motion. The cabbage, displeased with the damage the caterpillar is doing to its tissues, is releasing volatile compounds into the air, hoping to attract parasitoid wasps like Cotesia glomerata, which use caterpillars like the one eating through the cabbage?s precious leaves as incubators for their larvae?and succeeds. Drawn by the compounds wafting off of the damage plant, a female wasp arrives and finds the defenseless caterpillar. Using a needle-like appendage, she injects her eggs into the caterpillar?s body, and her larvae hatch and feed on the caterpillar?s internal organs one by one, carefully selecting the least important so that their meal survives as long as possible. Finally, when they are ready to pupate, the wasp larvae tunnel out, and through a chemical trick, convince their half-dead host to spin them a protective web of silk. Success, thinks the plant (if plants could think); its cry for help has stopped another hungry caterpillar in its tracks.

Lysibia nana parasitizing cocoons of Cotesia glomerata

But, as Dutch scientists have discovered, the story doesn?t end there. What goes around comes around for the C. glomerata, as there are other wasps that use them as hosts, laying eggs in the wasp larvae that grew in the caterpillar, like a parasitic Russian doll. Researchers have discovered that these hyperparasitoids (parasitoids of parasitoids) can smell the call being broadcast by the plant, too.

After all, the world is a large place. Parasites that need to find a very specific, small host benefit from having a way of finding what they need without wasting tons of energy searching. So it makes sense that Cotesia glomerata and other parasitoid wasps with caterpillar hosts are drawn to the chemical compounds emitted by damaged plants. If they?re drawn, the wasps that parasitize them should be drawn, too. So the team tested this hypothesis by collecting air from undamaged plants, plants damaged by uninfected caterpillars, and plants damaged by caterpillars already infected with parasitiod wasp larvae, then presented those scents to hyperparasitoid wasps to see if they were attracted to them.

Not only were the wasps attracted to the smell of caterpillar damage in general, ?we found that they preferentially detected odours of plants damaged by infected caterpillars,? explained Dr Erik Poelman, lead author of the study published today in PLoS Biology. The wasps were nearly five times more attracted to the damage done by infected caterpillars. ?We were excited by these results as they indicate that hyperparasitoids rely on a network of interactions among plant, herbivore and parasitoids to locate their host?.

But how did the wasps detected whether the caterpillars were infected? Poelman and his team wanted to find out. It?s known that infection can change the saliva contents of caterpillars, so they took the saliva from uninfected and infected caterpillars and presented those scents to the wasps, but the wasps didn?t care. So while the infection is altering the caterpillar?s saliva, the change in attractive chemicals had to be coming from the plant. They then tested the different air collections for volatile compounds, and found the ones damaged by caterpillars infected with Cotesia glomerata were only 40% similar to the ones damaged by uninfected caterpillars. Something about infection changes the saliva in a caterpillar, which in turn affects what volatile compounds a plant emits when it gets damaged by that saliva.

This complex web of interactions calls in to question the role of the plant compounds in the first place. Though they are often thought of as a ?cry for help,? the team noted that this may not be the case at all. ?Although plant volatiles may function as a ??cue?? to parasitoids, they may not be a specific ??signal?? released by the plant (implying a selective benefit),? write the authors. ?It is important to emphasize that volatile cues may provide many community members with information and thereby may not necessarily result in a fitness benefit to plants.?

These findings also call into question the use of parasitoid wasps as biocontrol for managing pests. Cotesia glomarata has been introduced and intentionally released in a number of agricultural areas to control caterpillars like Pieris rapae. Recently, some have suggested that farmers might be able to spray the volatile compounds emitted by damaged plants to attract more parasitoids, as a way of reducing pest populations without using pesticides. But the authors think that this strategy might not be so clear-cut. ?Our results show that hyperparasitoids may parasitize up to 55% of the parasitoid offspring, therefore potentially playing a major role in parasitoid population dynamics,? they caution. ?Overexpression of herbivore-induced plant volatiles [HIPVs] in crops or field application of synthetic parasitoid attractants may not benefit pest control in conditions where the responses of hyperparasitoids to HIPVs cause major mortality to parasitoids.?

In other words, the interactions between species are far more complex than we once thought, and we can?t assume we can predict how our manipulations will affect a community?which is generally the trouble we?ve gotten into when trying to use biocontrol mechanisms. The more we try to tinker with interspecies interactions, the more unintended consequences we seem to have.

Obama to appeal to public on fiscal cliff

(AP) ? President Barack Obama plans to make a public case this week for his strategy for dealing with the looming fiscal cliff, traveling to the Philadelphia suburbs Friday as he pressures Republicans to allow tax increases on the wealthy while extending tax cuts for families earning $250,000 or less.

The White House said Tuesday that the president intends to hold a series of events to build support for his approach to avoid across-the-board tax increases and steep spending cuts in defense and domestic programs. Obama will meet with small business owners at the White House on Tuesday and with middle-class families on Wednesday.

The president's visit to a small business in Hatfield, Pa., that makes parts for a construction toy company will cap a week of public outreach as the White House and congressional leaders negotiate a way to avoid the tax increases and spending cuts scheduled to take effect Jan. 1. The trip will mark Obama's first public event outside the nation's capital since winning re-election.

Both sides warn the so-called "fiscal cliff" could harm the nation's economic recovery, but an agreement still appears far from assured. The White House and congressional Republicans have differed on whether to raise revenue through higher tax rates or by closing tax loopholes and deductions.

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, has pushed for raising additional revenue through the reducing of tax loopholes instead of raising tax rates on wealthy Americans. The White House has countered that the president will not sign legislation that extends current tax rates for the top 2 percent of income earners, or those households with incomes over $250,000.

Pennsylvania Sen. Pat Toomey, a conservative Republican who opposes Obama's plan to increase taxes on the wealthy, said that while a presidential visit to his state "is always welcome," he remains staunchly against Obama's strategy for avoiding the fiscal cliff crunch.

"The president seems absolutely determined to inflict a tax increase on the American people," Toomey told CNN on Tuesday. He said Obama and congressional Democrats must come up with cuts in entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare.

Obama, only weeks after winning re-election, has signaled his intention to rally the public to pressure Congress to support his agenda, an approach that helped him win passage of a payroll tax cut extension and prevented interest rates on millions of federal student loans from doubling last summer.

Obama campaign manager Jim Messina said in an email to supporters after the election that the president's volunteer base was crucial to his re-election but said it was not aimed "just to win a campaign. We have more progress to make, and there's only one way to do it: together."

Following the election, Obama aides asked supporters to record YouTube videos discussing the need to have the wealthiest Americans pay more in taxes. Some of the people who shared their stories on YouTube planned to join Obama at the White House on Wednesday.

On Friday, Obama will tour and deliver remarks at The Rodon Group manufacturing facility in Hatfield, Pa., offering the company up as an example of a business that depends on middle-class consumers during the holiday season. The company manufactures parts for K'NEX Brands, a construction toy company whose products include Tinkertoy, K'NEX Building Sets and Angry Birds Building Sets.

Congressional Republicans, led by Boehner, have expressed openness to discussing additional revenue but oppose any plan that raises tax rates on the wealthy. They argue that the higher rates would also hurt some small businesses and hinder economic growth.

Republicans have called for changes to the tax code to eliminate tax breaks and loopholes that primarily benefit the wealthy. Several key Republican lawmakers have also said they would not be bound by a no-tax-increase pledge that they have adhered to in the past.

Boehner and GOP leaders planned to meet Wednesday with members of a bipartisan coalition of former members of Congress and business leaders that has advocated cuts in spending in major health care programs as well as changes in the tax code to raise more money but also to lower rates.

Edmonds Military Wire: Abbott & Costello discuss the unemployment conundrum

By Michael Schindler

I love humor. And what I specifically love is that truth can be conveyed through humor and suddenly it ?all makes sense.? This Abbott & Costello parody was sent to me with a political bent ? of which I took liberty to edit ? because at the end of the day it does no good to name call. (Yes, I still teach my children that name calling results in NO positive outcomes.) Congrats to President Obama ? we all have a tough road ahead and it will require us all to work together. So, enjoy this for its humor.
COSTELLO: I want to talk about the unemployment rate in America .
ABBOTT: Good Subject. Terrible Times. It?s 7.8%.
COSTELLO: That many people are out of work?
ABBOTT: No, that?s 14.7%.
COSTELLO: You just said 7.8%.
ABBOTT: 7.8% unemployed.
COSTELLO: Right 7.8% out of work.
ABBOTT: No, that?s 14.7%.
COSTELLO: Okay, so it?s 14.7% unemployed.
ABBOTT: No, that?s 7.8%.
COSTELLO: WAIT A MINUTE. Is it 7.8% or 14.7%?
ABBOTT: 7.8% are unemployed. 14.7% are out of work.
COSTELLO: IF you are out of work you are unemployed.
ABBOTT: No, the President said you can?t count the ?Out of Work? as the unemployed. You have to look for work to be unemployed.
COSTELLO: BUT THEY ARE OUT OF WORK!!!
ABBOTT: No, you miss his point.
COSTELLO: What point?
ABBOTT: Someone who doesn?t look for work can?t be counted with those who look for work. It wouldn?t be fair.
COSTELLO: To whom?
ABBOTT: The unemployed.
COSTELLO: But they are ALL out of work.
ABBOTT: No, the unemployed are actively looking for work. Those who are out of work gave up looking and if you give up, you are no longer in the ranks of the unemployed.
COSTELLO: So if you?re off the unemployment roles that would count as less unemployment?
ABBOTT: Unemployment would go down. Absolutely!
COSTELLO: The unemployment just goes down because you don?t look for work?
ABBOTT: Absolutely it goes down. That?s how Obama gets it to 7.8%. Otherwise it would be 14.7%. He doesn?t want you to read about 14.7% unemployment.
COSTELLO: That would be tough on the President.
ABBOTT: Absolutely.
COSTELLO: Wait, I got a question for you. That means there are two ways to bring down the unemployment number?
ABBOTT: Two ways is correct.
COSTELLO: Unemployment can go down if someone gets a job?
ABBOTT: Correct.
COSTELLO: And unemployment can also go down if you stop looking for a job?
ABBOTT: Bingo.

Bottom line: Bingo. Forget the numbers. Enjoy the humor ? America, it?s time to put our partisanship aside and find a way to get America back to work.

Chicago offers to pause school closings after 2013 cuts

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said on Monday he wants a five-year moratorium on closing public schools after anticipated cuts in 2013, but the teachers union called his gesture a "sleight of hand."

The third-largest school district in the United States, which was hit with a strike by public school teachers in September, was already facing a financial crisis that was made worse by granting pay rises to teachers.

The school district forecasts a $1 billion deficit next year and is widely expected to try to balance its budget in part by closing public schools.

Enrollment in Chicago Public Schools has fallen nearly 20 percent in the last decade, mainly because of population declines in poor neighborhoods. The district said it can accommodate 500,000 students, but only about 400,000 are enrolled.

Some 140 schools are half-empty, according to the district. The union said 86 Chicago public schools have closed in the past decade, but the district could not confirm that number.

Urban school districts around the country are grappling with the issue declining enrollment, including in Philadelphia, Milwaukee, Kansas City, Detroit, Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C., according to a study last year on school closings by the Pew Charitable Trust.

The first Chicago teachers strike in 25 years drew national attention to the city's dispute over education reforms such as teacher evaluations. The teachers were given a pay rise as part of the strike settlement.

Chicago teachers and some parents have complained that the school district has ignored their concerns.

The offer of a five-year moratorium was seen as an attempt by Emanuel, who has championed education reform and has repeatedly clashed with the teachers union, to provide some stability to Chicago schools after closings in the coming year.

"Mayor Emanuel recognizes that for many years CPS (Chicago Public Schools) has made too many piecemeal decisions around school actions, which has caused unnecessary disruptions to students, parents and schools across the city," said Barbara Byrd-Bennett, who was appointed by Emanuel after the strike ended to head the district.

Byrd-Bennett spoke to a business group on Monday at the City Club of Chicago.

The district faces a December 1 deadline to issue a proposed list of schools to be closed, although Byrd-Bennett has asked the Illinois legislature for a four-month delay until March 31.

The Chicago Tribune has reported that school district officials are considering closing up to 120 schools next year, or about 17 percent of the total. The district has established a commission to study the issue.

Byrd-Bennett told reporters on Monday that the district does not have a number under consideration.

At the heart of the dispute over school closings is the expansion of charter schools, which are publicly funded, but mostly non unionized. The number of charter schools has risen even as neighborhood public schools are closed.

"Today's announcement is nothing more than a sleight of hand," the Chicago Teachers Union said in a statement. "How can the district cry 'under-utilization' as a justification for school closings while it simultaneously approves the opening of new charter campuses?"

The teachers union has complained that charter schools undermine public education and force more community schools to close. The academic performance record of charter schools compared with community schools is mixed, according to national studies.

Chicago now has 103 charter or "contract" schools, some run by philanthropists, which account for 12 percent of students. There are plans by supporters for 60 more charter schools over the next five years, according to the district and the union.

The union said 88 percent of students affected by Chicago school closings or other actions in the past decade were African-American and most closed schools have been in poor neighborhoods.

Sheriff has cancer, expects to stay at post | sheriff, department ...

SANTA ANA ? Sheriff Sandra Hutchens has been diagnosed with cancer but expects to remain at the helm of the Orange County Sheriff's Department while undergoing treatment, according to a memo she sent to her staff last week.

Hutchens, who has headed the department since 2008, told employees in the department that she anticipates "constraints" in her normal work schedule.

Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens speaks during a 9/11 commemoration ceremony at Irvine Valley College this year.

PAUL BERSEBACH, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

According to the memo, dated Nov. 19, Hutchens recently was diagnosed with breast cancer, which she said, "is both contained and curable."

Jim Amormino, spokesman for the Sheriff's Department, declined to comment on the memo or elaborate. He said a statement may be coming from the department later Monday.

Hutchens, 57, of Dana Point, was appointed to the county's top law-enforcement post in 2008 on a 3-2 vote by the county's Board of Supervisors. Immediately after her appointment, she faced political opposition.

A retired division chief from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Hutchens was both criticized and praised as an Orange County outsider.

She was the county's first permanent sheriff after Mike Carona resigned from the position. He is now serving time in federal prison after being convicted of tampering with a witness during his corruption investigation.

In 2010, Hutchens won election to the sheriff's position, beating out Anaheim police Deputy Chief Craig Hunter and former sheriff's Lt. Bill Hunt.

What, if any, changes may come to the department's top brass was not immediately clear Monday.

"I will ask my Command Staff to assist me over the next 6-8 months with some of the activities I regularly handle," Hutchens said in the memo.

"At the end of that time, I will be back to my usual self," she wrote.

There already have been some changes to the department's top positions, and more are expected before the end of the year.

Assistant Sheriff Mike James, who headed custody and court operations, retired in September and was replaced by Lee Trujillo.

Assistant Sheriff Tim Board, who heads professional services command, also is expected to retire this year.

Hutchens has been very active outside her role as sheriff. She is a member of the California State Sheriff's Association and the California Peace Officers' Association.

In March, she was appointed by Gov. Jerry Brown to the Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training, which establishes training requirements for law-enforcement agencies statewide.

Bangladesh's worst-ever factory blaze kills over 100

DHAKA (Reuters) - Fire swept through a garment factory on the outskirts of Bangladesh's capital killing more than 100 people, the fire brigade said on Sunday, in the country's worst-ever factory blaze.

Working conditions at Bangladeshi factories are notoriously poor, with little enforcement of safety laws, and overcrowding and locked fire doors are common. The cause of this fire was not immediately known.

The blaze at the nine-storey Tazreen Fashion factory in the Ashulia industrial belt of Dhaka started on the ground floor late on Saturday and spread, trapping hundreds of workers.

"So far, the confirmed death toll is 109, including nine who died by jumping from the building," Mizanur Rahman, deputy director of the fire brigade, told Reuters.

Witnesses said the workers, mostly women, ran for safety as the fire engulfed the plant but were unable to get through narrow exits.

"Many jumped out from the windows and were injured, or died on the spot," Milon, a resident, said.

Most of the bodies were burnt beyond recognition and authorities had started burials while mourning relatives scrambled to find their loved ones, officials and witnesses said.

Unofficial sources put the number of dead at more than 120. Most of the bodies were found on the second floor, Rahman said.

Bangladesh has around 4,500 garment factories and is the world's biggest exporter of clothing after China, with garments making up 80 percent of its $24 billion annual exports.

This was the highest ever death toll in a Bangladeshi factory fire. In 2006, 84 people were killed in a blaze in the southern port of Chittagong where fire exits had been blocked.

More than 300 factories near the capital shut for almost a week earlier this year as workers demanded higher wages and better working conditions.

Punt return lifts Colts

By MICHAEL MAROT

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 3:46 p.m. ET Nov. 25, 2012

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Colts receiver T.Y. Hilton made history Sunday.

Indianapolis' other emerging rookie star returned a punt 75 yards for one touchdown and caught an 8-yard pass from Andrew Luck in the third quarter to lead the Colts past Buffalo 20-13.

For the Colts (7-4), it was a milestone victory.

The win strengthened Indy's playoff position, Andrew Luck joined the 3,000-yard club, Reggie Wayne moved up two spots on the NFL's career receptions list and Hilton became the first player in franchise history to score on a receiving touchdown and on a kick return in the same game.

Ailing head coach Chuck Pagano was there to see - and savor - every special moment.

It was the second straight game Pagano has attended since being diagnosed with leukemia on Sept. 26. Pagano also received a standing ovation from the crowd when he appeared with team owner Jim Irsay briefly. Both waved to the fans.

But this was no textbook win for the Colts.

Offensively, they were sluggish. Luck finished 20 of 37 for 240 yards with one touchdown and one interception. And defensively, they couldn't quite keep the Bills at arm's length.

C.J. Spiller ran 14 times for 107 yards to lead Buffalo (4-7), which still has not won at Indianapolis since 1998 and has dropped seven of the last eight against their former AFC East rival. Ryan Fitzpatrick was 17 of 33 for 180 yards with one TD and one interception, and Stevie Johnson caught six passes for 106 yards.

The Bills did end their red-zone touchdown drought when Fitzpatrick threw a 1-yard TD pass to Lee Smith to cut Indy's lead to 20-13 with 11:30 left in the game.

But that wasn't quite enough against Hilton and the Colts.

Hilton got things started by fielding Shawn Powell's 48-yard punt at his own 25, faking out Smith, breaking another tackle in the middle of the field and sprinting to the end zone for Indy's first punt return for a score in five years.

Then things bogged down.

The Bills reached the red zone twice and managed just a pair of short field goals from Rian Lindell, who hit from 33 yards and 31 yards.

Indy countered with a 25-yard field goal from Adam Vinatieri late in the second quarter, and then took advantage of Buffalo's errant time management - and the officials' adding 1 second to the game clock after it hit 0:00. Vinatieri's 19-yard field goal as time expired to give Indy a 13-6 halftime lead.

Hilton provided the spark in the second half, too.

Luck took the Colts on a 15-play, 87-yard drive to open the second half with his steady, methodical play, finally hooking up with Hilton in the back of the end zone for an 8-yard score that made it 20-6.

All the Bills could get in the second half was Fitzpatrick's TD pass.

Nintendo Wii U North American sales top 400K in first week

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime says Wii U sales crested 400K units in its first week, according to internal sales data. That's just part of a 1.2 million hardware sales week that Nintendo's enjoyed across the past seven days -- which include the crucial Black Friday -- where the Wii saw 300K units sold, and portables dominated. Nintendo's 3DS sold 250K, while the aged DS moved 275K -- not too shabby for an eight-plus-year-old console! CNET snagged the data from Fils-Aime in a post-Wii U launch phone interview, where he characterized 3DS sales as continuing on a "record-setting pace" (now at more than 6 million units sold-in to North American retailers).

As for the seemingly paltry launch sales of the Wii U console -- 200K units shy of the original Wii's launch week -- Fils-Aime says it's a question of his company's ability to keep it in stores and not of lacking demand. "Retailers are also doing their best to get the product to store shelves. But as soon as product hits retail, they're selling out immediately," Fils-Aime explains. Without giving any concrete promises or timetables, he adds, "We are looking to have as much product into retail as possible."

Thanksgiving Day activities are more than just food and football ...

It?s Thanksgiving time again.

It?s a time where family and friends come together and express gratitude to God over a lovely feast.

Traditionally, we spend the day eating, drinking and crowded around the television watching football.

It?s the American way.

On the contrary, not everyone is into watching football. That?s fine.

To each his own.

If you are one of these people or just want to break up the cycle, here are a few alternatives that can make your Thanksgiving different but nevertheless, enjoyable:

? Movies are a popular alternative. Check local listings to see what shows are playing. Television networks are usually festive and show appropriate programs for the holidays. It?s pretty likely a ?Peanuts? holiday special will be on that day. No cable? Red Box is available if there is something in particular you want to see.

? You can put on music. Music can cheer you up and put you in a festive mood. Or break out the karaoke machine and sing along to your favorite tunes. However, you may want to brace yourself for that one.

? For those of you who live a more active lifestyle, get out there and take part in a Thanksgiving Day turkey trot. A 5K and 10K will be held in support of the Stockton/San Joaquin Emergency Food Bank. Be grateful that you can walk or run and thankful to have food on your plate. Act now so you can sign up on time.

? For some general family fun, why not play some board games? Besides the point of winning and losing, board games can teach younger players how to get along with others by playing by the rules. There are thousands of board games to choose from, but Monopoly has been a tried and true classic.

? You may not want to watch football on television, but maybe you would rather play football. You and your family might want to toss the ball around or get a game of two-hand touch or tackle in your backyard or at a local park, whatever your pleasure.

This is usually something that the men and young boys in the family participate in, but if mom wants to get out there and show off her ?laser?rocket arm? then more power to her.

Whatever activities you choose to partake in, be thankful and have fun.

Research Proposal Part-2 | MBA Term Papers

Theoretical Framework

Theoretically it seems that education indeed plays a pivotal role in helping to quit smoking, since education increases awareness among people as well as their sense of responsibility to their surroundings. Moreover, education helps people understand the message that a variety of organisations try to impart. People also become more aware about their future as well as that of their children, on account of education. They come to know of all the health and mental hazards they would be susceptible to due to smoking, only if they are educated enough to understand.

Data Collection and Methodology

In order to find empirical evidence regarding the research proposal, sample data has been collected upon the level of education among the people, their smoking habits and other factors like the societal influence, etc. from the archives of the National Health Interview Survey database of 2005. Though the subject matter is to explore only the influence of education on the smoking habits of the people, it is wise to include some other variables too, since that will only help in enhancing the statistical significance of the model in question.

The model to be framed is of the following form,

Smoking habit = Level of Education + Social Influence + ?

Data Analysis

The dependent variable is a dummy in nature, defined as,
D = 1, if the individual smokes and
= 0, otherwise.

The ideal model in this case will be a probit model that is used to run regression in case the dependent variable is qualitative in nature.

Since probit regression is an example of a log-linear model, so, the estimated coefficients have to be tested with the help of Z-test and the significance of the model has to be tested using chi-square tests.
