JetBlue Airways will get first U.S.-made Airbus jet

MOBILE, Alabama (Reuters) - JetBlue Airways Corp Chief Executive Dave Barger said on Tuesday that his airline will receive the first U.S.-assembled Airbus jet, which will roll off the assembly line in 2016.

Barger spoke at a groundbreaking for a $600 million factory of EADS' Airbus unit in Mobile, Alabama. The plant is expected to create 1,000 jobs, and bolster U.S. spending by Airbus, which already spends $13 billion with U.S. suppliers.

"We'll be the launch customer of this assembly line," Barger said. "We have well over 100 of the A320s today. It's a big day for JetBlue as well."

JetBlue is also expecting delivery of another 100 A320 narrow-body aircraft, he said.

No longer an upstart but not as big as Delta, United or the soon-to-be merged American Airlines-US Airways, JetBlue is one of the larger mid-sized U.S. carriers.

Although assembly is a relatively small part of the work of building a jet, Airbus is betting that having a U.S. facility will boost its credentials and help win deals. The Mobile plant will be only the second Airbus has outside Europe that builds its top-selling workhorse jet. The other is in China.

Asia stocks muted on slack US jobs data; Nikkei up

BANGKOK (AP) ? Asian stock markets were mixed Monday amid concerns about tensions on the Korean Peninsula, bird flu in China and a disappointing U.S. jobs report, although the Nikkei piled on more gains as the yen's dramatic fall boosted the country's powerhouse export sector.

The Japanese yen has weakened sharply in the aftermath of a surprise decision Thursday by the Bank of Japan to overhaul its monetary policy, pledging to double the money supply to achieve a 2 percent inflation target within two years.

The Nikkei 225 in Tokyo shot up 2.4 percent to 13,141.35. The dollar vaulted to 98.56 yen from 94.13 yen late Friday in New York.

A weaker currency can help make Japanese exports more price competitive in overseas markets. Suzuki Motor Corp. surged 6.6 percent. Sharp Corp. advanced 5.4 percent.

"In contrast to sentiment a few months ago, Japan is now winning support for its monetary policy," said analysts at DBS Bank Ltd. in a market commentary.

Elsewhere, however, markets were mixed after the U.S. government reported a sharp decline in hiring in March.

U.S. employers added just 88,000 jobs in March, which was half the average of the previous six months. The closely watched report was a letdown for investors who had become more optimistic about the economy after recent positive signs on housing.

South Korea's Kospi was flat at 1,927.04, with tensions between Seoul and Pyongyang remaining high. North Korea has for weeks been threatening military or other action to punish South Korea and the U.S. for holding joint military drills.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index bounced between gains and losses as investors sized up the potential threat from an outbreak of a new bird flu strain that has sickened 21 people, killing six of them. All cases have been reported in the eastern part of China. The Hang Seng by midday was up 0.1 percent to 21,750.66.

Health officials believe people are contracting the virus through direct contact with infected fowl and say there's no evidence the virus is spreading easily between people.

"Bird flu and the North Korea situation are still dangling out there. Investors are not very bullish. They are waiting to see how these two things evolve," said Jackson Wong, vice president of Tanrich Securities in Hong Kong.

Australia's S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.3 percent to 4,907.70, with investors putting aside the worrisome U.S. jobs report to do some bargain-hunting among some recently beaten down shares.

Gold-related stocks rose as the price of the precious metal recovered. Newcrest Mining, Australia's No. 1 gold miner, advanced 1.7 percent. Hong Kong-listed Zijin Mining Group added 1.7 percent.

On Wall Street on Friday, stocks wilted after the U.S. government reported a sharp slowdown in hiring. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 0.3 percent, to 14,565.25. The Standard & Poor's 500 declined 6.70 points, or 0.4 percent, to 1,553.28. The Nasdaq composite dropped 0.7 percent to 3,203.86.

Benchmark oil for May delivery was up 17 cents to $92.87 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 56 cents to close at $92.70 in New York on Friday.

The euro rose to $1.2986 from $1.2822.

PSA: HTC One pre-orders start at AT&T today, Sprint tomorrow

PSA HTC One preorders start at AT&T today, Sprint tomorrow

You've been eying the HTC One's zero-gap body for well over a month, and now it's your chance to do something about it. AT&T is launching its promised pre-order campaign for the One today: soon, if not as you read this, upgraders and new subscribers can plunk down as little as $200 for a 32GB model or $300 for the network-exclusive 64GB edition. While these buyers likely won't get their phones until closer to the April 19th store date, that free Media Link HD offer remains on the table to encourage an early commitment. And those who prefer service from the House of Hesse don't have long to wait, either -- Sprint's pre-orders for the One begin tomorrow, with a similar $200 outlay involved for the 32GB variant. All that's left is for T-Mobile's edition to follow suit.

Obama introduces $100 million brain mapping initiative

President Barack Obama exits the East Room following his BRAIN initiative unveiling. (Charles Dharapak/AP)

President Barack Obama on Tuesday unveiled the BRAIN Initiative (Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies), a $100 million project aimed to increase understanding of the human brain.

The president, who publicly unveiled the program in the White House East Room, asked observers to imagine technology improving the lives of billions of people by reversing the effects of Parkinson's disease, epilepsy and traumatic brain injuries such as post-traumatic stress disorder for military veterans.

"There is this enormous mystery waiting to be unlocked" within the human brain, Obama said. And the BRAIN Initiative "will change that."

The initiative?a subject the president first referenced during his State of the Union address in January?would support technologies that map the brain in order to gain greater understanding of a variety of diseases as well as the links between the brain and behavior and other areas of study.

But the president on Tuesday also promoted his program as an economic effort.

"Every dollar we spent to map the human genome has returned $140 to our economy," Obama said.

The president also argued that efforts such as the BRAIN Initiative keep America ahead in innovation and help produce new discoveries that might otherwise be made in countries such as "China, India or Germany."

"Ideas are what power our economy," he said. "We do innovations better than anyone else."

The $100 million being spent on the program will be included in Obama's fiscal year 2014 budget to be released April 10. The funding breakdown includes: $40 million from the National Institutes of Health (NIH); $50 million from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), which is part of the Department of Defense; and $20 million from the National Science Foundation.

Support will also be provided by private sector foundations.

Republican House Majority Leader Eric Cantor offered immediate support for the idea behind the initiative, but took issue with the price tag.

?Mapping the human brain is exactly the type of research we should be funding, by reprioritizing the $250 million we currently spend on political and social science research into expanded medical research, including the expedited mapping of the human brain," Cantor said in a statement. "It's great science,"

LG Optimus G on AT&T starts seeing Android 4.1.2 updates

DNP AT&T's LG Optimus G Jelly Bean update

Last month, Sprint served up a dose of Jelly Bean for its variant of LG's Optimus G, and today it appears that AT&T is following suit. We've received a flurry of tips and screenshots like the one above denoting that Ma Bell is slowly starting to trickle out Android 4.1.2 to its Optimus G owners. Seeking confirmation, we've reached out to AT&T and will provide an update of our own once we receive official word on the matter. Until then, if you're rocking an Optimus G on Big Blue's network, now might be the time to manually check your device for new software.

Plastic film is the future of 3-D on-the-go

Apr. 2, 2013 ? Mobile device users will soon be able to view brilliant 3D content with the naked eye with a nano-engineered screen protector that turns ordinary mobile screens into 3D displays. The unique plastic film can also potentially be used as next generation security tokens employed by banks and corporations.

Temasek Polytechnic (TP) and A*STAR's Institute of Materials Research and Engineering's (IMRE) new nano-engineered screen protector that turns the ordinary screens of handheld devices into 3D displays will be marketed by start-up, Nanoveu Pte Ltd. The unique plastic film can also potentially be used as next generation security tokens employed by banks and corporations.

Ditch the 3D glasses. Thanks to a simple plastic filter, mobile device users can now view unprecedented, distortion-free, brilliant 3D content with the naked eye. This latest innovation from TP and IMRE is the first ever glasses-free 3D accessory that can display content in both portrait and landscape mode, and measures less than 0.1 mm in thickness.

"The filter is essentially a piece of plastic film with about half a million perfectly shaped lenses engineered onto its surface using IMRE's proprietary nanoimprinting technology," said Dr Jaslyn Law, the IMRE scientist who worked with TP on the nanoimprinting R&D since 2010 to enhance the film's smoothness, clarity and transparency compared to other films in the market.

?To complement the filter, the team developed applications for two software platforms, Apple iOS and Android, which allow users to play 3D content through its filter, in both landscape and portrait formats. The applications also allow 2D pictures taken using mobile devices to be converted into 3D. The team will be releasing a software development kit that enables game developers to convert their existing games into 3D versions.

The team is also exploring using the same technology for security access tokens to decode PIN numbers sent online as an inexpensive and portable alternative to rival bulkier and more expensive battery-operated security tokens, similar to those used by Singapore banks today.

?"The team's expertise in both hardware and software development in 3D technology has enabled high quality 3D to be readily available to consumers," said Mr Frank Chan, the TP scientist who led the overall NRF-funded project. "We have taken age old lenticular lens technology that has been around for the last hundred years, modernised it and patented it using nanotechnology." Lenticular lens technology creates a transparent film that retains the brilliance of 3D visuals and effects, which does away with the need for stronger back lighting and saves on battery consumption in mobile devices.

?? The two-year project was initially funded under a National Research Foundation (NRF) Translational R&D Grant in Dec 2010 to look at optimising the control of the nanostructures and integrating its effects with the complementary software applications. The team has since shifted its focus towards commercialisation with support from Exploit Technologies Pte Ltd (ETPL), A*STAR's technology transfer arm and a one-stop resource that brings together home-grown technology, funding, collaboration and networks to assist A*STAR spin-offs and start-ups.

Microsoft Launches Windows QuickStart Kit For Mac Developers, A $25 USB Stick With Windows 8 Pro And Parallels For Mac

windows8_quickstartEarlier this year, Microsoft launched modern.IE to help developers ensure that their sites work well with old and new versions of Internet Explorer. The company is adding a few more features to the service today, including a new code scanning tool for sites behind a firewall and virtual machines for IE 10 on Windows 7 and IE8 on Windows XP. The highlight of this release, however, is that for a $25 donation to Watsi.org, Kahn Academy or Code.org and $8 for shipping ($16 if you are outside the U.S.), Microsoft will now send Mac developers its Windows QuickStart Kit with a copy of Windows 8 Pro and Parallels Desktop 8 for Mac on a USB stick. As Sandeep Singhal, Microsoft’s group program manager for Internet Explorer notes in today’s announcement, “the most common way you test across browsers is through virtualization of many browsers and operating system combinations using your favorite virtualization platform, such as Hyper-V, VMWare, VirtualBox, or Parallels.” The cost of purchasing all the necessary software and licenses can make this difficult, however, especially for small startups. That’s why Microsoft is making a limited supply of these Windows 8 and Parallels Desktop for Mac USB sticks available (it’s not clear how limited this supply will be). As a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed when I asked about some more details about this offer, the version of Windows included here is Windows 8 Pro, which could be installed using Bootcamp, too. The OEM version of Windows 8 currently sells for just about $140. Developers can pre-order theirs here?on Swish.com – a site better known for aggregating pre-orders from Kickstarter and Indigogo. To ensure that only developer can order the sticks, Microsoft added a small (but easy to solve) puzzle on the check-out page. The sticks are scheduled to ship by the end of April. The QuickStart order page, by the way, shows a version of QuickStart for iOS developers who want to start building Windows Store apps. It’s not clear if this is a?separate?version of the QuickStart pack that was uploaded by mistake and which is yet to be announced, or if this is the same version as the one Microsoft is talking about today. New Modern.IE Features As part of today’s update to modern.IE, Microsoft now also makes Parallels for Mac images available on modern.IE for all IE versions and has updated the virtual machine installations process to make it
