Suicide bomber kills Pakistani president's guard

KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) ? A suicide bomber attacked a vehicle Wednesday carrying one of the Pakistani president's guards in the southern city of Karachi, killing him and two police officers, police said.

President Asif Ali Zardari was in Karachi at the time but was not near the scene of the attack, presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar said. The guard who was killed, Bilal Sheikh, provided security at Zardari's private residence in Karachi and also traveled with the president, Babar said.

"He was a sincere and a long-time member of our party, and we are sad over his death," the spokesman said.

The suicide bomber attacked Sheikh's vehicle when he stopped to buy fruit from a market, senior police officer Raja Umar Khatab said. The blast wounded 11 people, Khatab said.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

Karachi has a long history of violent attacks, both by Islamic militants and criminal gangs, some of which are allegedly connected with the city's main political parties.

The Pakistani Taliban, who are fighting a bloody insurgency against the government, have made significant inroads in the city in recent years. Many of its members fled Pakistan's northwest to escape army operations and U.S. drone attacks.

The Taliban are suspected of killing Zardari's wife, former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, in a gun and bomb attack in Pakistan's capital of Islamabad in 2007.

Millard Fillmore sworn in as president

On this day in 1850, Vice President Millard Fillmore is sworn in as the 13th president of the United States. President Zachary Taylor had died the day before, five days after falling ill with a severe intestinal ailment on the Fourth of July.

Fillmore's manner of ascending to the presidency earned him the nickname His Accidency. He was only the second man to inherit the presidency after a president's death. The first was John Tyler, who had assumed the presidency in 1841 after William Henry Harrison died of pneumonia 30 days into office.

Fillmore was born in 1800 and came from humble beginnings in New York. As a young man, he worked as a wool-carder, cloth-dresser and school teacher. In 1823, he became a lawyer and rose to political prominence in the Whig Party as New York's representative to Congress between 1832 and 1842. In 1847, he was elected New York state comptroller and a year later was chosen as Taylor's vice-presidential running mate.

As vice president, Fillmore quietly expressed his support of a compromise in slavery legislation and thus appeared sympathetic to slave-owning interests. However, President Taylor opposed slavery and vowed to use force against southern states who threatened to secede if denied the right to use slave labor. During Fillmore's single term as president, he passed the Fugitive Slave Act (1850), which made it a crime to support slaves trying to escape to free territories. He also presided over an era of increased settlement across the western part of the continent. As white settlers clashed with indigenous peoples, Fillmore approved one-sided treaties that forcibly placed Native Americans onto government reservations. During this time, millions of Native Americans died from disease and starvation and in wars with government-funded militias.

After losing the support of his northern anti-slavery constituency, the incumbent Fillmore was defeated by the Democrat Franklin Pierce in the 1852 presidential race. After making two more unsuccessful bids for the presidency in 1856 and 1860, he retired to Buffalo, New York, where he served on various legal and historical committees until his death in 1874.

BYU elite at turning players into NBA prospects

According to research at Emory University, BYU is one of the best schools in the country at turning recruits into draftable, NBA prospects.

A recent story out of Emory University's Sports Marketing Analytics group ranked BYU 2nd among non-BCS conference schools at transforming high school talent into NBA draft picks. They looked at recruiting classes from 2002 to 2011. Nevada was top among non-BCS schools. Truth be told, Nevada and BYU had the highest rates of any schools in the country.

* Chart courtesy of Emory Sports Marketing Analytics. For a full explanation of their system and the complete rankings, look here.

Of course, this is not apples to apples. In the time period covered, BYU only had one 4+ star recruit according to Rivals.com (DeMarcus Harrison); Duke averages nearly 3 of those recruits every single season. What the BYU coaching staff has excelled at is taking 3-star recruits (like Jimmer Fredette and Trent Plaisted) and turning them into NBA prospects. Or in one extreme case, they took a JC transfer (Rafael Araujo) and groomed him to be a lottery pick.

Why is this important? Well, this is the opposite of the criticism Bronco Mendenhall has endured from some observers about his inability to turn players into NFL prospects. That's mainly been put to bed with the early selection of Ziggy Ansah in the NFL draft, and the draft prospects of Kyle Van Noy and Cody Hoffman in 2014.

As the line goes, recruiting should be helped if you can show high school prospects that their professional dreams are more likely at your school than another. Not that Dave Rose is going to start handing out analytical reports to parents and high school athletes, but the point Rose could (and maybe does) make is that BYU has been a well above average place for 3-star recruits to turn into NBA draftees. It's not just Jimmer either. Trent Plaisted was drafted, Araujo was a nobody, and Travis Hansen was drafted as well if you go back a little further. Brandon Davies made an NBA summer team, and Tyler Haws is likely to get drafted and is playing for team USA.

BYU is not, in most cases, in the business of recruiting the elite hoops talent. This incoming class (which includes two 4-star recruits in Nick Emery and Eric Mika) is a huge exception to that. But what if Rose can get the best 3-star talent, in part by using the NBA draft success of guys like Jimmer and Plaisted as a recruiting pitch?

I don't think this report or these data points are likely to be the deciding factor in a recruit's decision, or will bring in 5-star talent; as Jabari Parker recently showed the world, BYU is not in the elite schools. But Rose (and Steve Cleveland before him) have shown they can create an experience that seems to enhance a recruit's chances to make an NBA roster.

Not many 3-star recruits make the NBA, and BYU is one of the best places to make that happen.

The $38000 Midsize SUV Challenge: Results - Automotive News ...

Midsize SUV Challenge

A quick look again at our judges:

  • Aaron Bragman, Detroit bureau chief for Cars.com
  • Joe Bruzek, editor and car reviewer for Cars.com
  • Mike Hanley, editor and car reviewer for Cars.com
  • James R. Healey, auto writer for USA Today
  • Ben Davis, producer for PBS' "MotorWeek"
  • Brian and Melissa Brown, our family judges for this Challenge

Here's how the score broke down: The experts' scores account for 75% of the total score; 15% from the family's scores; and 10% was based on fuel economy. To help you make your own comparisons of these SUVs, we've pulled together a list of what you get for $38,000.

2013 Toyota Venza

2013 Toyota Venza

Scorecard | Monroney Sticker | Research | Photo Gallery

What they liked: "Rides the lowest and feels the most carlike of the bunch," said Davis, and several others agreed. "That low ride also means easy access to the rear cargo area," he added. "The low step-in height makes it easy to get into and out of," Hanley said. Space was another favored attribute of the Venza. "Great backseat room," Healey said, "probably enough to minimize the 'are-we-there-yet' whining." More than a couple judges enjoyed the Venza's responsive engine. Bruzek liked the "sporty handling and acceleration," and Healey found it "fun to hammer. And it likes corners, and most SUVs can't say that." Davis also pointed out the "refreshingly simple-to-use climate and audio controls. The buttons and knobs are nice and high on the console."

What they didn't: The experts couldn't stop harping on the brakes. "You have to use lots of leg to get very little response," Healey said, "with a lot of sponginess in the bargain." He was not alone in his assessment. "The interior lacks the premium look and feel that the other models in this comparison have," Hanley said. Bragman said the "cheap, hard-plastic parts squeak and creak." And Davis knocked the "tired design, inside and out" of one of the oldest models in this segment. Bruzek noted the small display screen for the navigation system, and finally, several found the ride to be rough, in large part because of the large wheels.

The verdict: "It feels like there's less in this car for the same price as the others," Brian Brown said.

Key Features

  • IIHS Top Safety Pick and NHTSA five-star overall crash-test rating
  • All-wheel drive
  • The most bottleholders and cupholders (10 total)
  • Toyota's Entune multimedia system with app integration from your smartphone
  • Leather seating; front seats are heated
  • All windows are one-touch up and down
  • Power liftgate
  • Two years or 25,000 miles of complimentary maintenance
  • Cargo-area release levers for easy second-row seat folding

2013 Nissan Murano

2013 Nissan Murano

Scorecard | Monroney Sticker | Research | Photo Gallery

What they liked: In many ways, this was a driver's choice. "Light and tossable, the Murano is fun to drive," Bragman said. It "invites you to fling it a bit," Healey said, "yet also rewards you with mechanical aplomb when you don't feel like playing boy racer." The continuously variable automatic transmission "seems much more dialed in than what I'm used to from other Nissans," Davis said. It wasn't all drivetrain, though. The Murano provides "extreme seating comfort," Bruzek said, "with minimal wind and road noise." Bragman agreed. "Those aren't seats, they're thrones: amazingly big and comfortable." And Hanley applauded the "comfy backseat, even for taller adults."

What they didn't: The Murano is one of the oldest and most expensive competitors here, and it showed. "The Murano was the only model with cloth seats in the comparison, and their fuzziness wasn't appealing," Hanley said. Davis found them "hard to look at." Bragman wasn't won over by its polarizing looks: "Ugly is right," he said. "The styling isn't just dated, it's downright odd. It has no chin!" Healey was bothered by a lack of space. It "seems a bit tight for its apparent size," he said. Brian wasn't impressed with the interior: "I just don't like the materials or colors in here."

The verdict: "Ugly and a bit dated inside," Healey said, "but exceptional chassis tuning make driving rewarding."

Key Features

  • Only vehicle with a continuously variable automatic transmission
  • All-wheel drive
  • Only has four cupholders
  • Has RCA and USB inputs
  • Only vehicle with cloth seats; only vehicle without heated seats
  • Power liftgate
  • Cargo-area release levers for easy second-row seat folding

2013 Ford Edge

2013 Ford Edge

Scorecard | Monroney Sticker | Research | Photo Gallery

What they liked: The Edge stands out visually, both for its unique shape and the brilliant blue color that the tester arrived in. "The styling inside and out is attractive, if a little dated now," Bragman said. "Its bulldog stance is appealing," Healey agreed. Another area of agreement was the Edge's strong visibility. The large greenhouse for the crossover creates "great visibility, thanks to thin roof pillars," Hanley said. The Edge also seems to be a driver's car for a variety of reasons. "I like the sporty, driver-focused dash design," Davis said. "It creates a true cockpit feel." The Edge "feels planted and hunkered down at highway speeds," Bruzek said, and several experts raved about the Edge's ride quality and comfort.

What they didn't: That unique look rubbed some the wrong way. "The once-bold look no longer looks great," Davis said. "It's time for a refresh." Healey found fault with the Edge's handling. "It's very wallowing: The tighter the corner, the more you feel out of control," he said, "even at low speed." But the gorilla in the room for the Edge was Ford's MyFord Touch multimedia system. "The touch-sensitive center stack may look slick," Bragman said, "but it requires you to take your eyes off the road to use it, every time." For Hanley, the system "remains a frustratingly slow multimedia system with a poor interface." For the family, "technology is valuable, but it has to be technology I'm going to use," Missy Brown said. In the end, Healey said, what bothered him was the "price is too high for the features. It's more than $37,000, but there's no all-wheel drive or power liftgate, no push-button start."

The verdict: "The Edge is a solid servant with a nice list of features," Davis said. "The rise is sporty, quiet and comfortable. Unfortunately, its aging design looks even older when parked next to some of the others, and the pricing is a bit strong as well."

Key Features

  • Front wheel drive
  • IIHS Top Safety Pick
  • One of two vehicles with a blind spot warning system
  • No keyless access
  • Plenty of multimedia hookups: RCA, SD card, iPod and USB inputs
  • One of two without a power liftgate

2014 Kia Sorento

2014 Kia Sorento

Scorecard | Monroney Sticker | Research | Photo Gallery

What they liked: Fun to drive, comfortable ride and a cool-looking interior. What's not to like? "The drivetrain goes fast and shifts great," Healey said, "and it doesn't default to Eco mode on restart." It has a "refined ride at all speeds," Bruzek said. Its "refined and powerful V-6 provides exceptional passing power," Hanley added. "Excellent design textures inside and out," Davis said. "Even the grille was impressive." Bragman also chimed in that the Sorento has a "commanding driving position from the high seats and the low dashboard." And he noted: "Lots of great content for the money," a Kia recipe that continues to work for the automaker.

What they didn't: While that dashboard looks cool and is out of the way, it's a "dim digital dashboard," Davis complained. Several experts also said that rear visibility was lacking, and Healey said the amount of room was "not much versus the others." Tight rear-seat knee space and small rear-door storage pockets also drew knocks. Experts were split over both the ride quality (which some applauded) and material quality, which some called cheap. "I like the style of the Kia, but the others felt higher quality," Missy said. In terms of driving, "the gas pedal is unusually stiff, requiring extra effort when accelerating," Hanley said. It also has "notable body roll," he added. And Healey thought its price was "a bit steep, even considering it has all-wheel drive. Seems wrong that value-oriented brand Kia would be among the priciest models."

The verdict: "The Kia Sorento's ride is like no other Sorento before: refined, smooth and quiet over the roughest suburban roads," Bruzek said. "Its second row is roomy and filled with family-friendly features like side-window sunshades, a 110-volt household outlet and a flat floor for extra room."

Key Features

  • Redesigned for 2014
  • All-wheel drive
  • IIHS Top Safety Pick
  • Blind spot warning system
  • Kia's new UVO multimedia uses your smartphone via Bluetooth
  • Leather seating, front seats are both heated and ventilated

2013 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport

2013 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport

Scorecard | Monroney Sticker | Research | Photo Gallery

What they liked: The Santa Fe Sport was the crowd favorite, for many reasons. "It feels premium and has thoughtful features," Healey said, "such as large, color displays of numbers and letters in the driver information panel that are easily read with a peek." Its "premium interior finishes and cabin design might surprise some car shoppers," Hanley added, and Bragman called the Santa Fe Sport "the surprise athlete of the group. It feels light on its feet and is fun to drive quickly." Davis was wowed by the "out-of-this-world sunroof" and said that the below-load floor "hidden storage made me feel like Han Solo." Bruzek pointed out it was the only competitor "tested with a sliding rear seat," which is always helpful in a vehicle of this type. It wasn't just interior features, though. "The turbo four-cylinder's great low-end power makes passing and merging easy," Hanley said, and Bruzek said it was the "most nimble-handling of the bunch." Finally, the Santa Fe Sport was also the least expensive of the group.

What they didn't: That sunroof came at a cost, though: "It eats up headroom in the backseat," Bragman said. "Anyone taller than 5 feet 11 [inches] will not be comfortable." Several experts thought the four-cylinder engine was noisy and found its ride "bumpy," as Bruzek called it. That low price also meant that some key features, including a power liftgate or all-wheel drive, were missing. The SUV lacked space, Healey said: "Not exactly the [Chevrolet] Suburban of the bunch." And Healey and Hanley both faulted the handling. "It has a disappointing steering feel that's both numb and artificially weighted," Hanley said. Finally, several noted that visibility out the back was less than optimal.

The verdict: "The Santa Fe Sport's acceleration and features list are both impressive," Hanley said, "but Hyundai hasn't cracked the code as far as driving dynamics are concerned."

Key Features

  • New model for 2013
  • Only vehicle tested with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine
  • Front-wheel drive
  • IIHS Top Safety Pick and NHTSA five-star overall crash-test rating
  • No memory settings for power adjustable driver's seat and no smartphone app integration

2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Scorecard | Monroney Sticker | Research | Photo Gallery

What they like: Like isn't a strong enough word for how everyone felt about the Grand Cherokee's interior. "A luxury liner compared to the challengers," Healey raved. "It looks, feels, even smells like a luxury car in there," Bragman said. "Beautiful," "premium," "elegant" and "best in test" were also thrown around. But it's more than just a pretty face. "When the Eco mode is deactivated," Hanley said, "the V-6 engine and eight-speed transmission are a well-matched pair." It provides a "commanding view of the road," Bruzek noted. "It has nice rear visibility helped out by generous side mirrors," Davis said. Several noted the Chrysler Uconnect system's ease of use. "It's the best multimedia system of the bunch," Bragman said. And in the biggest affirmation possible, "it does as you ask" Healey said. "This feels nicer than the other cars," Missy said, "and for the same price? It's hard to believe something this nice costs the same as the others!"

What they didn't: That Eco mode drove a few judges crazy. "To leave it on is an offense against God and man," Healey said, "given how it hobbles the drivetrain and erases the Jeep's fun-to-drive factor." "That big power comes with a big thirst," Bragman pointed out, "and rear-wheel drive may not go over well in some climates." "I wish the pricing was a little lower so I could more easily afford one," Davis said. Both Davis and Bragman noted how busy the steering wheel is with buttons, both on the front and back of the wheel. Seriously. Interestingly, both Hanley and Davis found fault with the shifter. "The electronic gear selector has a cheap feel and makes it harder to select the gear you want," Hanley said.

The verdict: "This is the one to have if you are looking for a true SUV and not merely a carlike tall wagon," Bragman said.

Key Features

  • Refreshed for 2014
  • Rear-wheel drive (only one)
  • IIHS Top Safety Pick
  • Chrysler's Uconnect multimedia system with app integration from your smartphone
  • Only vehicle with a complimentary 12-month satellite radio subscription

  • Leather seats, heated front and rear seats, heated steering wheel
  • Rear parking sensors and a configurable gauge cluster

Afghanistan arrests former US translator

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Afghan authorities have arrested a man who served as a translator for U.S. Special Forces and was wanted on allegations he tortured and killed civilians, the country's intelligence service said Monday.

Zakaria Kandahari was picked up "recently" in the southern city of Kandahar for "various crimes," in a special operation conducted by the Afghan National Directorate for Security, the intelligence agency said in a statement.

It did not elaborate, but the Defense Ministry has said Kandahari was wanted on charges of murder and torture in connection with the disappearances of nine boys and men who turned up dead.

The U.S.-led coalition has denied any involvement in the disappearances, but the case has further strained Washington's relations with President Hamid Karzai, and could complicate plans to leave special operations forces in Afghanistan after combat troops complete their withdrawal next year. American officials have suggested keeping a special operations presence in Afghanistan in a counter-terrorism role against al-Qaida even after all other combat troops leave at the end of 2014.

When the allegations about Kandahari surfaced, Karzai ordered U.S. special forces out of the Narkh district of Wardak province, where the disappearances occurred. Karzai had originally ordered them out of the whole province but Gen. Joseph Dunford, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, said such a move would threaten the security of Kabul, 45 kilometers (less than 30 miles) south.

When he was arrested, Kandahari had three pistols, two fake Afghan National ID cards and seven other false IDs on him, the intelligence service said.

It added that it would release further details about the case later, and that its investigation of Kandahari is ongoing.

U.S. justices strike down AIDS funding restriction

By Lawrence Hurley

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday struck down a George W. Bush-era law requiring non-profit organizations to adopt an anti-prostitution policy in order to obtain federal funding for HIV/AIDS programs abroad.

Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in his majority opinion that the 2003 law violated the First Amendment free speech rights of non-governmental organizations that work on HIV/AIDS prevention.

The court vote was 6-2 with Justice Elena Kagan recused, most likely due to her previous role as solicitor general in the Obama administration, when she may have been involved in the litigation.

The law barred funding for organizations that operate programs overseas but do not have a blanket policy opposing prostitution and sex trafficking.

The organizations challenging the provision did not want to take a stand on prostitution. They said the law interfered with their work providing advice and counseling to prostitutes about the risks of HIV infection.

The non-profit world was divided, with 46 groups, many of which focus on women's rights, supporting the law.

The Alliance for Open Society International and Pathfinder International - non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that receive funding for overseas HIV/AIDS prevention - sued in 2005, citing the guarantee of free speech in the U.S. Constitution's First Amendment.

The groups obtained an injunction in 2006 that has prevented the policy from being enforced. Now it never will be.

Thursday's ruling upheld the appeals court's injunction.

"Condemnation and alienation are not public health strategies," said Marine Buissonniere, director of the Open Society Public Health Program, one of the groups that challenged the policy. "The pledge ignores years of evidence that sex workers are critical partners in the fight against AIDS," she added.

FIRST AMENDMENT AT ISSUE

In his opinion, Roberts noted that under Supreme Court precedent, the government can set conditions on funding that relate to the specific way the money is spent but cannot "seek to leverage funding to regulate speech" that falls outside the limits of the program.

"The case is not about the government's ability to enlist the assistance of those with whom it already agrees," Roberts said. "It is about compelling a grant recipient to adopt a particular belief as a condition of funding."

In this instance, the condition constituted "the affirmation of a belief that by its nature cannot be confined within the scope of the government program," meaning it violates the First Amendment, he wrote.

Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas dissented.

Scalia wrote in his dissenting opinion that the policy requirement was "nothing more than a means of selecting suitable agents to perform the government's chosen strategy."

Under the First Amendment, the government is not required to be "viewpoint neutral," he added. "Moreover, the government may enlist the assistance of those who believe in its ideas to carry them to fruition," Scalia said.

Representatives from the U.S. Agency for International Development, which overseas foreign aid, were not immediately available for comment.

The case prompted an unusual coalition of groups, some conservative and some liberal, to back the NGOs.

Eugene Volokh, a First Amendment expert at the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law, said if the court had endorsed the government's position, it could have led to all kinds of conditions being imposed on government funding and even other forms of government benefits, such as tax exemptions.

"The court wasn't willing to allow the government that kind of power," he said. Volokh filed a brief in the case in support of the challengers.

The American Civil Liberties Union took a similar position.

The government's ability to impose conditions on groups that receive funding does not allow it "to dictate what they believe or what they say with private funds," said attorney Steven Shapiro.

The case is Agency for International Development v. Alliance for Open Society International, U.S. Supreme Court, No. 12-19.

After tough week, Obama tries to change the subject to jobs

By Roberta Rampton and Mark Felsenthal

BALTIMORE (Reuters) - President Barack Obama on Friday sought to turn the spotlight from controversies threatening to swamp his agenda back to his top priority - the economy - and announced he will try to cut in half the time it takes to get federal approval for large job-creating projects.

Obama traveled to Baltimore, a short helicopter ride from the White House, to talk about steps he is taking to streamline permits for infrastructure, early childhood education, and positive signs in the economy.

He did not mention the trio of storms that have beset his administration in the past week and that some believe could overrun his second-term agenda.

Speaking in front of heavy equipment at Ellicott Dredges, a company that helped dredge the Panama Canal over 100 years ago, Obama took a swipe at the distractions of Washington politics.

"I know it can seem frustrating sometimes when it seems like Washington's priorities aren't the same as your priorities," Obama said in his upbeat speech.

"Others may get distracted by chasing every fleeting issue that passes by. But the middle class will always be my number-one focus, period," he said.

Obama's Baltimore trip is a good idea and a productive change of scene for him, said Chris Lehane, a Democratic strategist who specialized in damage control for the Clinton White House.

"It gets you out of the bunker," Lehane said.

Meanwhile, Washington was fixated on Friday on a Republican-led House of Representatives hearing where the now-fired head of the Internal Revenue Service was grilled about how agents targeted conservative groups for special scrutiny.

The IRS scandal was one of three that forced Obama on the defensive in the past week.

The White House was also doing damage control on what it said in the wake of last year's attack in Benghazi, Libya, that killed four Americans, and the Justice Department's seizure of phone logs of journalists at the Associated Press as it looked for leaks of classified information.

In his speech, Obama recalled advice he received as a young senator from longtime former Maryland Senator Paul Sarbanes.

"I asked him, 'What's your advice?' He says, 'Just keep in mind the people who sent you.' Because here in Washington, sometimes people get distracted," Obama said.

CONTROVERSY NOT FAR AWAY

Obama was warmly received in Baltimore, first visiting an elementary school where he saw 4- and 5-year-olds learning how to spell and describe their favorite zoo animals in a pre-kindergarten class - the type of program he has said should be available to all American children so they get a good start.

Later, he talked about how to get through the rocky times in life at a roundtable with a group of people at the Center for Urban Families, a non-profit that helps people find jobs and training.

He walked through the century-old factory floor of Ellicott Dredges, where men in steel-toed boots were working on a giant corkscrew excavation tool destined for a Bangladesh shipyard.

But even on this friendly tour, political controversy was near at hand.

His tour guide was Peter Bowe, the company's chief executive, who on Thursday told a House of Representatives hearing that his company has been hurt by the protracted federal approval process for the Keystone XL crude oil pipeline from the oil sands fields in Canada.

"For us, it's all about jobs," Bowe said on Thursday, urging speedy approval of TransCanada's pipeline. The company first applied for project approval in 2008.

Obama delayed the project last year, saying it needed further review. A decision is unlikely until late this year or even early 2014.

The pipeline has been championed by Republicans, who blame Obama for the delay, and pilloried by environmental groups who argue Obama's credibility on his vow to address climate change hinges on rejecting the project.

Obama did not mention pipelines in his speech about delays for infrastructure projects.

But he said he had drawn inspiration from someone he met at the plant - Myrna LaBarre, who had worked for the company for 50 years and who described her secret for success.

"She said, 'Be honest, be helpful, accept your mistakes and improve upon them, be good to people, keep a good sense of humor, have the best work ethic possible, and handle the good times and get over the bad,'" Obama said.

"If we keep that in mind, if we just all keep Myrna's advice in mind, keep plugging away, keep fighting, we'll build an even better America than we've got right now," he said.

Warriors Top Nuggets 131-117: Stephen Curry Scores 30 As Golden State Evens Playoff Series 1-1

DENVER ? The Golden State Warriors hardly missed much of anything Tuesday night.

Not their shots.

Not their injured All-Star.

Stephen Curry had 30 points and 13 assists and the scrappy Warriors handed the Denver Nuggets their first loss at home in more than three months, a 131-117 stunner that evened their playoff series at a game each.

Rallying around injured David Lee, who cheered on the bench in street clothes, the Warriors got 26 points from surprise starter Jarrett Jack, a career-high 24 from rookie Harrison Barnes in his debut at power forward and 21 from Klay Thompson.

The sixth-seeded Warriors, who became the second road team to win in the postseason following Chicago's victory at Brooklyn on Monday, wrested homecourt advantage from the NBA's best home team in the series that shifts to Oakland for Game 3 on Friday night.

"They were knocking down shots," Denver's Andre Iguodala said in an understatement

Better than they ever had before in a playoff game, a franchise playoff-record 64.6 percent from the field (51 of 79).

"We are a very good shooting basketball team," Warriors coach Mark Jackson said. "We've got guys that can knock down shots. You talk about Klay Thompson and Steph Curry, in my opinion, they're the greatest shooting backcourt in the history of the game."

The third-seeded Nuggets were an NBA-best 38-3 at home during the regular season but needed Andre Miller's last-second shot to beat Golden State by a basket in the opener and extend their franchise-best winning streak to 24 games.

With Golden State losing Lee to a torn hip flexor and the Nuggets getting top rebounder and energizer Kenneth Faried back from a sprained ankle, this one looked like a mismatch, even Curry acknowledged.

And it was, only not the way the Pepsi Center crowd anticipated.

"We're a resilient team, said that all year. When guys go down, other guys step up," said Curry, who played through a tender left ankle after turning it late in the third quarter. "We showed that tonight. Big road win for us. We've got to go home and protect our homecourt."

Even without their All-Star, the Warriors outrebounded the Nuggets 36-26.

"We didn't do much of anything very well," Nuggets coach George Karl lamented. "I don't think I ever coached a game when a team got three 35-point quarters, maybe in my career. Ever."

The best anybody shot against Denver during the season was 54 percent, by the Los Angeles Lakers way back on Nov. 20, and the most points the Nuggets had allowed was 126 at San Antonio on Nov. 17.

Ty Lawson and Corey Brewer each scored 19 points for Denver and Iguodala and Miller both had 18, but the Nuggets were playing catch-up from the middle of the second quarter and couldn't keep up with so many of the Warriors' shots falling, negating Denver's league-best transition game.

Lee led the league in double-doubles with 56 and had another before getting hurt in the fourth quarter of the series opener on Saturday. The Warriors were 3-18 without him over the last three seasons, but Jackson mixed and matched his lineup to make up for his All-Star's absence on this night, when Lee gave advice to his teammates during timeouts.

The Nuggets were hoping the return of Faried would help them reverse their 10-point disadvantage on the boards in Game 1. But he was rusty and the same problems that plagued Denver in the opener ? missing too many open shots, getting outmuscled on the glass and giving up open 3s ? haunted them once again and even more so.

Curry scored 15 points in the second quarter and hit four jumpers during a 14-5 run the Warriors used to grab control and take the air out of the Pepsi Center as they cruised into halftime with a 61-53 lead that would never be threatened in the second half.

Curry swished another sweet jumper to start the third quarter and the Warriors opened up a 17-point lead they would stretch to 20 in the fourth quarter.

"The game plan tonight was to keep the ball out of Stephen Curry's hands, but he came off (the pick-and-rolls) and had open looks and then he started finding people," Lawson said. "After that, we started scrambling and we can't play like that."

The Nuggets pulled within 76-69, but Thompson hit a 3-pointer from the right corner and Curry a 3 from the left to make it 82-69. Both were wide open as Denver's mismatched defenders were again running ragged trying to keep up with the Warriors, who handled the altitude just fine.

Denver got its deficit down to 115-105 but this time it was Jack's turn to make a wide-open 3 with the Nuggets defenders scrambling around.

Faried finished with four points and two rebounds in 21 minutes.

The arena was half-empty by the time the horn sounded, a solitary fan yelling derisively, "Tacos!" when Evan Fournier's free throw fell through the hoop to give the Nuggets 110 points, the magic number for a promotion in which fans get discounted tacos.

Notes: The Warriors shot a sizzling 61 percent in the first half, when they outrebounded the Nuggets 21-14. ... The Nuggets' last loss at home was 112-108 to the Washington Wizards on Jan. 18. ... Denver had just eight fast-break points, compared to Golden State's 14. ... Curry's 30-10 playoff game was the first for the franchise since Sleepy Floyd on May 10, 1987.

Gut bacteria byproduct predicts heart attack and stroke

Apr. 24, 2013 ? A microbial byproduct of intestinal bacteria contributes to heart disease and serves as an accurate screening tool for predicting future risks of heart attack, stroke and death in persons not otherwise identified by traditional risk factors and blood tests, according to Cleveland Clinic research published today in The New England Journal of Medicine.

The research team was led by Stanley Hazen, M.D., Ph.D., Vice Chair of Translational Research, Chair of the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine for the Lerner Research Institute and section head of Preventive Cardiology & Rehabilitation in the Miller Family Heart and Vascular Institute at Cleveland Clinic, and W.H. Wilson Tang, M.D., Department of Cardiovascular Medicine in the Miller Family Heart and Vascular Institute and Lerner Research Institute.

The current study is an extension of Dr. Hazen's previous work, in which he found that a chemical byproduct called trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) is produced when intestinal bacteria digest the nutrient phosphatidylcholine, commonly known as lecithin. The prior research showed that TMAO levels in the blood were associated with heart disease. Dr. Hazen and colleagues have now confirmed that gut flora are essential in forming TMAO in humans and demonstrated a relationship between TMAO levels and future cardiac events like heart attack, stroke, and death -- even in those with no prior evidence of cardiac disease risk.

To demonstrate the role of gut flora in forming TMAO, human subjects were asked to eat two hard-boiled eggs (a common dietary source of lecithin) and a capsule of labeled lecithin (as a tracer). After ingestion, TMAO levels in the blood increased. However, when these same subjects were given a brief course of broad-spectrum antibiotics to suppress their gut flora, their TMAO levels were suppressed, and no additional TMAO was formed, even after ingesting lecithin. These results demonstrated that the intestinal bacteria are essential for the formation of TMAO.

In the second phase of the study, the researchers measured TMAO levels in a large, independent, clinical cohort -- consisting of more than 4,000 adults undergoing cardiac evaluation at Cleveland Clinic -- over a three-year follow-up period. They found that higher TMAO blood levels were associated with higher future risks of death and nonfatal heart attack or stroke over the ensuing three-year period, independent of other risk factors and blood test results. These results complement those of another recent study of Dr. Hazen's linking gut flora metabolism of a structurally similar nutrient found in animal products, carnitine, to TMAO production and heart attack risk.

"Heart disease remains the No. 1 killer, and while we know how to reduce cholesterol, treat blood pressure, and reduce cardiac risks through diet and other interventions, a substantial residual risk still remains," Dr. Hazen said. "We need to find new pathways to attack heart disease, and these findings strongly suggest that further research into the involvement of gut microbiome in the development of cardiovascular disease could lead to new avenues of prevention and treatment of heart disease."

Dr. Hazen further suggested, "These studies show that measuring blood levels of TMAO could serve as a powerful tool for predicting future cardiovascular risk, even for those without known risk factors. More studies are needed to confirm that TMAO testing, like cholesterol, triglyceride or glucose levels, might help guide physicians in providing individualized nutritional recommendations for preventing cardiovascular disease. Our goal is not to suggest dietary restrictions of entire food groups. Eggs, meat and other animal products are an integral part of most individuals' diets. Our work shows, however, that when digesting these foods, gut flora can generate a chemical mediator, TMAO, that may contribute to cardiovascular disease."

Geoscientists predict new compounds could change our view of what planets are made of

Apr. 24, 2013 ? A team of researchers led by Artem R. Oganov, a professor of theoretical crystallography in the Department of Geosciences, has made a startling prediction that challenges existing chemical models and current understanding of planetary interiors -- magnesium oxide, a major material in the formation of planets, can exist in several different compositions. The team's findings, "Novel stable compounds in the Mg-O system under high pressure," are published in the online edition of Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics. The existence of these compounds -- which are radically different from traditionally known or expected materials -- could have important implications.

"For decades it was believed that MgO is the only thermodynamically stable magnesium oxide, and it was widely believed to be one of the main materials of the interiors of the Earth and other planets," said Qiang Zhu, the lead author of this paper and a postdoctoral student in the Oganov laboratory.

"We have predicted that two new compounds, MgO2 and Mg3O2, become stable at pressures above one and five million atmospheres, respectively. This not only overturns standard chemical intuition but also implies that planets may be made of totally unexpected materials. We have predicted conditions (pressure, temperature, oxygen fugacity) necessary for stability of these new materials, and some planets, though probably not the Earth, may offer such conditions," added Oganov.

In addition to their general chemical interest, MgO2 and Mg3O2 might be important planet-forming minerals in deep interiors of some planets. Planets with these compounds would most likely be the size of Earth or larger.

The team explained how its paper predicted the structures in detail by analyzing the electronic structure and chemical bonding for these compounds. For example, Mg3O2 is forbidden within "textbook chemistry," where the Mg ions can only have charges "+2," O ions are "-2, and the only allowed compound is MgO. In the "oxygen-deficient" semiconductor Mg3O2, there are strong electronic concentrations in the "empty space" of the structure that play the role of negatively charged ions and stabilize this material. Curiously, magnesium becomes a d-element (i.e. a transition metal) under pressure, and this almost alchemical transformation is responsible for the existence of the "forbidden" compound Mg3O2.

The findings were made using unique methods of structure prediction, developed in the Oganov laboratory. "These methods have led to the discovery of many new phenomena and are used by a number of companies for systematically discovering novel materials on the computer -- a much cheaper route, compared to traditional experimental methods," said Zhu.

"It is known that MgO makes up about 10 percent of the volume of our planet, and on other planets this fraction can be larger. The road is now open for a systematic discovery of new unexpected planet-forming materials," concluded Oganov.

This work is funded by the National Science Foundation and DARPA.

(AP) ? David Lee went from Golden State's All-Star power forward and double-double machine to the Warriors' biggest cheerleader and strategic adviser during timeouts.

Mostly, though, he just sat back and enjoyed the show Tuesday night when the Warriors stunned the Denver Nuggets 131-117 to even their playoff series at a game each.

The Warriors hardly missed much of anything. Not many of their shots, and not even their injured All-Star, who is out for the rest of the playoffs with a torn right hip flexor.

Behind Stephen Curry's 30 points and 13 assists, the Warriors became the first opponent to walk off the Pepsi Center court a winner since the Washington Wizards on Jan. 18.

The Warriors also got 26 points from surprise starter Jarrett Jack, a career-high 24 from rookie Harrison Barnes in his debut at power forward and 21 from Klay Thompson.

Most importantly, the sixth-seeded Warriors, who became the second road team to win in the postseason following Chicago's victory at Brooklyn on Monday, wrested home-court advantage from the NBA's best home team.

"They were knocking down shots," Denver's Andre Iguodala said.

That's an understatement. They were knocking them down better than they ever had before in a playoff game, a franchise playoff-record 64.6 percent from the field (51 of 79).

Every one of the nine Warriors who took at least a shot made better than half of them.

"Man, they were knocking it down," Ty Lawson marveled.

"We are a very good shooting basketball team," Warriors coach Mark Jackson said. "We've got guys that can knock down shots. You talk about Klay Thompson and Steph Curry, in my opinion, they're the greatest shooting backcourt in the history of the game."

Curry scored just one bucket, a 3-pointer, after turning his ankle but said he doesn't expect it to be an issue Friday night when the series shifts back to Oakland for Game 3.

Asked if he thought the Nuggets were overconfident with Faried back and Lee down, Jack said: "They're confident for a good reason. They're a great team, especially playing in this building where they've only lost three games. I would be confident too. I don't think that's a shot at us, but they're back at full strength.

"If we were at full strength we'd be confident, as well. This by no means is a celebratory situation for us. We still have to come in and take care of business Friday."

Some Immigration Opponents Shy Away from Boston Talk

The specter of the Boston Marathon bombings ? and the fact that they were allegedly carried out by two immigrants to the United States ? continues to hang over the immigration reform efforts underway in the Senate.

A seven-hour hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee Monday showed that those opposed to the Gang of Eight?s legislation seem willing to point to national security concerns as a reason to delay or significantly alter the immigration bill.

?The background checks in this bill are insufficient to prevent a terrorist from getting the amnesty,? argued Kris Kobach, the Kansas Secretary of State who helped author Arizona?s famously strict immigration law. ?The Tamerlan Tsarnaev example demonstrates how important an alien's ability to have freedom of movement and to travel abroad for terrorist connections and terrorist training is and how dangerous it can be for Americans,? he said, referring to one of the men suspected in the Boston bombings.

Mark Krikorian, the executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies who advocates for lower immigration levels, raised questions about why the Tsarnaev brothers were given visas to come to the U.S. in the first place.

?The Boston bombing is not an excuse for delay of considering this immigration bill, but it is an illustration of certain problems that exist with our immigration system,? he said. ?What does it say about the automated background checks that this bill would subject 11 million illegal immigrants to, that in-person interviews by FBI agent of Tamerlan Tsarnaev resulted in no action, even though it was actually based on concerns about terrorism??

But the Republican lawmakers who have expressed opposition to aspects of the Gang of Eight?s bill declined to follow up on the Boston-related sections of Kobach?s and Krikorian?s testimony. Instead, Sens. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, John Cornyn, R-Texas, Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., and Mike Lee, R-Utah, focused on other issues, ranging from border security to the legalization provisions.

Grassley in particular was so averse to being accused of saying the bombings should delay reform that he got in a shouting match with Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., early in the hearing.

?I never said that,? Grassley shouted, with no small measure of indignation, when Schumer referenced his colleagues, ?who are pointing to what happened, the terrible tragedy in Boston? as an ?excuse for not doing a bill or delaying it.?

Schumer then said he wasn?t referring to Grassley, who at the start of Friday?s hearing on the bill said a close look at the immigration system was very important,?"particularly in light of all that's happening in Massachusetts right now and over the last week."

Democrats and members of the Gang of Eight have been going on the offensive against anyone suggesting that the bill?s passage should be slowed because of the bombings. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., opened the hearing by saying he was ?troubled a great deal? by opponents of the bill who ?began to exploit the Boston Marathon bombing.?

?Let no one be so cruel as to try to use the heinous acts of these two young men last week to derail the dreams and futures of millions of hardworking people,? he said. ?The bill before us would serve to strengthen our national security by allowing us to focus our border security and enforcement efforts against those who do us harm.?

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., a member of the Gang of Eight, said, ?If Boston tells us anything, we need to be aware of who's living among us, whether they're native-born or come in on a visa and become a citizen.?

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said Monday on Fox News: ?I?m in the camp of, if we fix our immigration system, it may actually help us understand who all?s here, why they?re here, and what legal status they have.?

That?s not to say there haven?t been Republicans who argued for a delay after the bombings. They just don?t sit on the Judiciary Committee.

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., who has outlined his own vision for comprehensive reform, penned a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., Monday, asking that national security concerns be a part of the debate going forward.

?We should not proceed until we understand the specific failures of our immigration system,? he wrote. ?Why did the current system allow two individuals to immigrate to the United States from the Chechen Republic in Russia, an area known as a hotbed of Islamic extremism, who then committed acts of terrorism? Were there any safeguards? Could this have been prevented? Does the immigration reform before us address this??

He called for hearings in the Senate Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee to study the national security aspect of the debate.

Two key House Republicans also backed up the Gang of Eight members on Monday by saying that immigration reform could improve national security.

Screening detects ovarian cancer using neighboring cells

Apr. 22, 2013 ? Pioneering biophotonics technology developed at Northwestern University is the first screening method to detect the early presence of ovarian cancer in humans by examining cells easily brushed from the neighboring cervix or uterus, not the ovaries themselves.

A research team from Northwestern and NorthShore University HealthSystem (NorthShore) conducted an ovarian cancer clinical study at NorthShore. Using partial wave spectroscopic (PWS) microscopy, they saw diagnostic changes in cells taken from the cervix or uterus of patients with ovarian cancer even though the cells looked normal under a microscope.

The results have the potential to translate into a minimally invasive early detection method using cells collected by a swab, exactly like a Pap smear. No reliable early detection method for ovarian cancer currently exists.

In previous Northwestern-NorthShore studies, the PWS technique has shown promising results in the early detection of colon, pancreatic and lung cancers using cells from neighboring organs. If commercialized, PWS could be in clinical use for one or more cancers in approximately five years.

The ovarian cancer study was published this month by the International Journal of Cancer.

PWS uses light scattering to examine the architecture of cells at the nanoscale and can detect profound changes that are the earliest known signs of carcinogenesis. These changes can be seen in cells far from the tumor site or even before a tumor forms.

"We were surprised to discover we could see diagnostic changes in cells taken from the endocervix in patients who had ovarian cancer," said Vadim Backman, who developed PWS at Northwestern. "The advantage of nanocytology -- and why we are so excited about it -- is we don't need to wait for a tumor to develop to detect cancer."

Backman is a professor of biomedical engineering at the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science. He and his longtime collaborator, Hemant K. Roy, M.D., formerly of NorthShore, have been working together for more than a decade and conducting clinical trials of PWS at NorthShore for four years. Backman and Roy both are authors of the paper.

"The changes we have seen in cells have been identical, no matter which organ we are studying," Backman said. "We have stumbled upon a universal cell physiology that can help us detect difficult cancers early. If the changes are so universal, they must be very important."

Ovarian cancer, which ranks fifth in cancer fatalities among American women, usually goes undetected until it has spread elsewhere. The cancer is difficult to treat at this late stage and often is fatal.

"This intriguing finding may represent a breakthrough that would allow personalization of screening strategies for ovarian cancer via a minimally intrusive test that could be coupled to the Pap smear," Roy said.

At the time of the ovarian cancer study, Roy was director of gastroenterology research at NorthShore and worked with Jean A. Hurteau, M.D., a gynecological oncologist at NorthShore. (Hurteau is an author of the paper.) Roy is now chief of the section of gastroenterology at Boston University School of Medicine and Boston Medical Center.

The study included a total of 26 individuals. For cells taken from the endometrium (part of the uterus), there were 26 patients (11 with ovarian cancer and 15 controls); for cells taken from the endocervix, there were 23 patients (10 with ovarian cancer and 13 controls). The small size of the study reflects the difficulty in recruiting ovarian cancer patients.

Cells were placed on slides and then examined using PWS. The results showed a significant increase in the disorder of the nanoarchitecture of epithelial cells obtained from cancer patients compared to controls for both the endometrium and endocervix studies.

The cells for the ovarian cancer study were taken from the cervix and uterus. For the earlier lung cancer study, cells were brushed from the cheek. For the colon, cells came from the rectum, and for the pancreas, cells came from the duodenum. Cells from these neighboring organs showed changes at the nanoscale when cancer was present.

PWS can detect cell features as small as 20 nanometers, uncovering differences in cells that appear normal using standard microscopy techniques. PWS measures the disorder strength of the nanoscale organization of the cell, which is a strong marker for the presence of cancer in the organ or in a nearby organ.

The PWS-based test makes use of the "field effect," a biological phenomenon in which cells located some distance from the malignant or pre-malignant tumor undergo molecular and other changes.
