The Importance of Recurrent Estate Plan Updates - The Wiewel Law ...

[An estate case resulting in a dreaded family feud] underscores why clients should review their estate plans annually because tax laws change. Failing to do this might land families in court and entangle inheritances in litigation.

It is apparent that 2012 is a unique year for planning with the current estate tax and gifting laws. But as the years go by and laws change, are you paying attention to your estate plans and how they could be affected?? Such was the case back in 2010 when there was no estate tax, a very unique situation that some did not plan for.

It just goes to show that changing laws matter, and that your estate plans must change accordingly.

For fresh evidence of the necessity for annual visitation of the estate plan, and for the oddities of 2010, Financial Planner magazine recently published an article titled ?Family Feud: Review Estate Plans Annually.? It?s the case of the family behind Magnolia Audio Visual, and the couple that sold its retail rights to Best Buy and accumulated a cool $100 million estate in the process. Unfortunately, the parents weren?t as savvy with their estate planning.

The estate plan provided that the maximum amount allowable under the federal estate tax threshold would be passed down to the children, with the rest to pass to the surviving spouse to thereby avoid immediate estate taxation. Unfortunately, the plan didn?t account for the fact that 2010 didn?t have an estate tax (thanks to expiring Bush-era laws and a gridlocked Congress).

The wife died. When the husband nevertheless claimed the estate that was to pass to the children under the estate tax planning, the children were noticeably irked. It seems they had been passed over and were in danger of losing a fortune afforded under the once-in-a-lifetime and quite unintended tax loophole. Accordingly, the children filed suit against their father on the grounds of ?non-compliance, forgery and the use of undue influence.?

This case serves as a lesson to all that we should frequently update our estate plans to ensure our wishes are carried through to our loved ones.

UK Newsx.com ? Some Computer Parts Available Online that You ...

This November, the most recent title in the Call of Duty series is supposed to be available, while by autumn 2013, its rival, the Battlefield series, is supposed to give out a beta version. Expect high-definition renders, cool graphics, and huge explosions to reach your computers very soon. But the more crucial question may be: ?Is your PC ready for them??

It seems only yesterday when the world first played 8-bit games like Space Invaders; today, gamers want something more. This implies that the computer should progress to support the continuously advancing quality of games in relations to game play, graphics, and so forth. The specs of computer parts online should at least be a match for today?s games. Listed below are ideas of what the gaming computer today should be like.

Processor

Two popular processor brands in the computer market today are Intel and AMD. Their top-of-the-line processors are the FX-4170 and Core i7; but at over $ 100, it?s still fairly pricey at this stage. In the meantime, you can opt for processors such as Core 2 Duo (Intel) or Phenom II (AMD).

Random access memory (RAM)

The RAM aids your computer on playing games more efficiently by getting a lot faster access to the hard disk. Games that are heavy on graphics call for a faster RAM to work on, say 2 to 4 gigabytes. A number of games, however, still work efficiently on 1 GB RAM; so it?s actually an issue of the nature of the game you would like to play.

Graphics card

In the graphics card category, brands like Nvidia and AMD dominate with their GeForce and Radeon lines of graphics cards. Fortunately is that some top-class graphics cards are very competitively priced like Nvidia?s GeForce GTX 570, a downscale of the GTX 580 but one step above the GTX 480. If you want to play with a wider screen, go with AMD?s Radeon HD 6970. This can support resolutions set as high as 2500?1600 with its high memory.

For a really good idea on the computer parts you may need to get for gaming, use the ?Can You Run It?? tool online at SystemRequirementsLab.com. It can tell you whether or not your computer is prepared to run a specific game. For more information, call a supplier of computer parts from Dell or any other brand.

RELIGION AND SOCIETY - Good News Broadcasting System

Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka has said that it is an infringement of one?s rights to segregate on the basis of one?s religion. Kalonzo who was speaking at a church function in Nairobi was responding to cries by the famous Akorino faithful who said they have always been neglected both in school and in public office. The presidents sentiments were also echoed by the anti-jigger campaigner and AHADI TRUST CEO Stanley Kamau.

Commitment Issues In Men - Dangers Of Using Ultimatums

Commitment Issues In Men - Dangers Of Using Ultimatums

It is very common, among women who have been waiting to be proposed marriage for a long period of time, having commitment issues with their partner, to think that the best solution is to present their boyfriend an ultimatum concerning the relationship. If the woman wants badly to be engaged to their boyfriend waiting can lead to desperation. And the most common consequence of desperation can be the need to give an ultimatum. However, this attitude has some serious drawbacks that we will analyze in the rest of this article.

Pressure can lead to the end of the relationship

What most women don't realize is that this type of behaviour often results in the end of the relationship. Nobody likes to receive an ultimatum and of course men don't like to receive an ultimatum from their girlfriend regarding marriage.

If men fail to commit, they often have reasons that they cannot explain to delay their decision to propose. There are certain things they perceive in their girlfriend that don't allow them to feel that she is the women to spend the rest of his life with.

With an ultimatum, he is forced to make a decision in that moment, and his feelings would cause his decision would probably be to end the relationship.

Not be prepared to listen to a "never"

If, despite this, the woman decides to use an ultimatum, she should be prepared to pack her bags and live if the answer to the "Now or Never" question is what she was not expecting and didn't want to hear: "Never".

Staying in a relationship after he has said he would never commit to her, will loose all her credibility, because it would mean that the ultimatum was not real.

How can he take you seriously if you asked him the most important question of your life and that question was not authentic because you gave two chance: Now or Never, he answered never, but you continued with him, so never was not really never.

Conclusion

If somebody wants to use an ultimatum, she should be prepared to act in consequence after hearing the truth. It is completely acceptable to use this technique to make him commit if she is really prepared to receive the negative answer.

If she does not want to spend more time with somebody who seems will never propose marriage to her, why should she wait , and what for ? The best alternative is to stop the relationship immediately as it will have no future.

This NOAA satellite image taken Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012 at 1:45 a.m. EDT shows a cold front moving through New England bringing rain showers. A trough is currently off the coast of southern Florida with rain and isolated thunderstorms.(AP PHOTO/WEATHER UNDERGROUND)

In this Weather Underground forecast for Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012, a cold front pulls offshore into the Atlantic Ocean, allowing for high pressure to build in and dry out the East Coast. Meanwhile, a low pressure system in the West brings scattered showers and thunderstorms to the Intermountain West and Great Basin. (AP Photo/Weather Underground)

Wet weather will diminish across the East Coast on Sunday as a low pressure system in eastern Canada lifts northeastward and away from the region. Flow around the system will continue producing lake effect rain showers across the southeastern shores of the Great Lakes, but shower activity will be light and widespread.

A cold front associated with the system will lift northeastward by mid-day, allowing for a few more showers and thunderstorms to develop over the far Northeast early in the day.As the system moves further away, it will continue pushing cool air in from central Canada. This will allow for chilly Fall weather to spread from the Upper Midwest and into the Ohio River Valley and Northeast.

High temperatures will remain in the 60s for these areas, while overnight lows will dip into the upper 20s for some of the Northern Tier states. Frost and freeze advisories will remain in effect for parts of the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes regions.

In the South, showers and thunderstorms will continue across southern Florida as a cold front lingers over the region. This obtains moisture from the eastern Gulf of Mexico, spreading more heavy rains and strong thunderstorms over southern Florida throughout the day.

Out West, a low pressure system moves eastward from the Pacific Northwest and into the Intermountain West on Sunday. This will push moisture in from the Pacific Ocean, triggering widespread showers and thunderstorms across the Intermountain West, Great Basin, and moving into the Northern Rockies. Breezy winds and cooler temperatures will accompany this system. Temperatures ranged Saturday in the lower 48 states from a morning low of 15 degrees at Hazen, N.D., to a high of 102 degrees at Imperial, Calif.

Going for the record: Can anything stop 2012 from being warmest ever?

For super-warm 2012 to end up as an average year in the lower 48 states would require an astonishing, and record-breaking, cold snap over the final 4 months. That's not in the forecast.

As the US heads into the final three months of the year, 2012 is likely to end up as the warmest year on record for the lower 48 states, according to an analysis from the federal government's National Climatic Data Center.

That would mark the fourth time in the last 14 years that annual average temperatures for the continental US either set records or flirted with them ? a cluster unmatched since the 1930s.

Since January, year-to-date temperatures for the continental US have consistently run well above the 20th-century average with each passing month ? reaching a maximum of 6 degrees Fahrenheit above average for the period ending March 31, then declining steadily to 4 degrees F above the 20th-century average for the period ending August 31.

Still, that 4 degrees is at least a full degree higher than January-to-August averages in any of the five warmest years on record.

"That's quite a jump," says Jake Crouch, a climate researcher at the center, located in Asheville, N.C.

The year's unusual warmth for the US results from a one-two punch, many researchers say. Normal swings in large-scale climate features, such as El Nino and La Nina, are superimposed over a longer-term world-wide warming trend triggered by the build-up of atmospheric greenhouse gases that come from burning fossil fuels, as well as from land-use changes,?researchers say.

Even if year-to-date temperatures were to fall back to the 20th-century average by the end of the year, 2012 would still be a record buster, Mr. Crouch says.

To pull off that feat of cooling, he explains, September through December would have to rank among the 20 coldest final four months on record ? highly unlikely given the historical record as well as seasonal forecasts for the final four months of 2012.

Most of the continental US ? from the Southwest up into the Rockies and eastward into Maine ? is forecast to see warmer-than-normal temperatures throughout this final period, notes Huug van den Dool, with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center in College Park, Md.

The eastern third of the US is expected to see the drought easing ? particularly between the Mississippi River and the Appalachian Mountains and in the Southeast.

One key reason is the apparent shift in conditions from two consecutive years of La Nina to a weak El Nino this coming winter. La Nina and El Nino represent opposite states in sea-surface temperatures and wind patterns along the equatorial Pacific. Both can affect atmospheric circulation patterns well beyond the tropics.

For the US, La Nina tends to push average storm tracks across the continent father north than usual, while El Nino tends to drive them farther south. The onset of El Nino is expected to bring welcome rainfall to the Southeast and Mid Atlantic states. But the more southerly path for storms could lead to a dearth of precipitation farther north in sections of the country already hard hit by drought.

As a result, forecasters are calling for drought to continue through the end of the year for much of the western two-thirds of the US, with drought conditions likely to extend into the Pacific Northwest.

Globally, June through August posted the third warmest temperatures on record for that three-month period. January through August was the ninth warmest first eight months on record.

Of keen interest has been the dramatic decline in summer sea ice in the Arctic Ocean, which this melt season hit a record low of 1.3 million square miles ? 18 percent below the previous record set in 2007 and 51 percent below levels in 1979, when consistent satellite measurements of sea ice began.

Less ice means more open ocean to absorb sunlight during the summer, energy released as heat in the fall and winter. The decline not only affects local Arctic weather patterns in the fall ? found in forecasts of warmer than normal temperatures along northern Alaska ? but researchers are beginning to uncover ways in which the heat being released deeper into an Arctic fall and winter can affect atmospheric?circulation patterns at lower latitudes.

Indeed, the decline in summer ice has occurred far faster than models of global warming's effect on the top of the world predicted. For seasonal-forecasting purposes, this is prompting forecasters to rely even more heavily on their computer-based forecasts than they might otherwise, suggests Dr. van den Dool.

"The reliance on models will probably increase, because what is happening right now in the Arctic appears to be so fast that we hardly have any time to take data points and declare that we now know what is going on in the present climate," he says.

Intuition and sound judgment will remain key features of forecasts, he adds, "but it's a challenging situation."

JK Rowling's former Edinburgh home for sale

LONDON (AP) ? J.K. Rowling's former home can be yours ? if you can conjure up 2.25 million pounds ($3.7 million).

The eight-bedroom Victorian house in Edinburgh belonging to the Harry Potter author is listed for sale on the website of real estate agents Rettie.

It's described as "an exceptional detached family house standing within a large yet discreet landscaped and walled garden" in one of the city's most exclusive areas.

Rowling lived there with her husband and three children while she wrote several volumes in her seven-book adventure series about the boy wizard. Rowling, whose books have sold 450 million copies, now owns another house in the city, as well as other properties in Scotland and London.

She is due to release her first book for adults, "The Casual Vacancy," next week.

Dell Inspiron 15R Special Edition (7520)

Dell's Inspiron Special Edition laptops are souped-up versions of the company's popular everyday computing laptop line, offering Ivy Bridge technology, discrete graphics, and a somewhat hipper look. The Dell Inspiron 15R Special Edition (7520) ($1099.99 direct) is equipped with a Core i7 CPU, switchable AMD Radeon graphics, and a speedy mSATA drive that boosts performance. It also comes with a Blu-ray drive, which complements the striking 15.6-inch full HD display. You won't get a full days' worth of battery life from the Inspiron 15R Special Edition and its graphics performance, while good, can't match that of our current Editors' Choice, the Lenovo IdeaPad Y580 , but it is a strong media laptop just the same.

Design and Features
A black anodized aluminum lid with a tight honeycomb textured pattern distinguishes the Inspiron 15R Special Edition from the standard Dell Inspiron 15R , but it retains the same silver trim and smooth rounded corners. A shiny Dell logo is positioned in the center of the lid.

The chassis measures 1.3 inches thick and weighs 6.1 pounds, making it a shade heavier than the 5.3-pound Sony VAIO E15 (SVE15116FXS) but on par with the Lenovo Y580. Granted, six pounds is not exactly back-breaking, but compared with today's ultrabook laptops it is monstrous and your shoulder will feel its presence. On the plus side, build quality feels solid and durable.

The Inspiron 15R's screen measures 15.6 inches and has a 1,920-by-1,080 resolution, which means it can display 1080p, or full HD, content. The screen has a matte coating that is glare resistant and non-reflective. Color quality was outstanding and image detail was superb while watching the BBC's Planet Earth on Blu-ray. There was some loss of color fidelity when viewed from an extreme angle but the picture was still quite watchable. The two-watt Skullcandy speakers embedded in the base are loud but a bit too trebly. Missing is the three-watt subwoofer found on the Dell Inspiron 17R Special Edition .

The keyboard deck, which is done up in the same textured finish as the lid, contains a comfortable full size chiclet-style keyboard and a recessed touchpad with a smooth surface. The keyboard doesn't have a number pad but it is backlit for nighttime typing. The touchpad is centered in the middle of the deck and is responsive, as are the two silent mouse buttons. As with the 17R Special Edition, there are three Dashboard keys at the top of the deck that when pressed launch the Dell Audio utility and the Windows Mobility Center, while the third key is user programmable.

The Inspiron 15R Special Edition is loaded with features. You get four USB 3.0 ports, VGA and HDMI video outputs, headphone and microphone jacks, a 7-in-1 card reader, 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth radios, and WiDi (wireless display) capabilities, which requires a transmitter such as Netgear's Push2TV to send HDMI video to an HDTV or any other compatible external display. There's also a Blu-ray/DVD combo drive, a feature that was missing on the Dell 17R Special Edition.

A 1TB 5,400rpm hard drive provides plenty of storage for all of your media files and the 32GB mSATA drive provides speedy access to frequently used data. Windows 7 Home Premium, Dell Stage media software, and Dell DataSafe backup software are preinstalled along with a few useful apps such as Dell Webcam and Skype. Unfortunately you also get a few not so useful apps in the form of trailware and gameware.

Performance
Dell Inspiron 15R Special Edition (7520) The Inspiron 15R Special Edition serves up impressive productivity and multimedia performance, thanks to a potent combination of components including Intel's third generation Core i7-3612QM processor (2.10 GHz), 8GB of system memory, and the aforementioned mSATA drive. Its PCMark7 score of 3658 eclipsed the IdeaPad Y580 by more than 750 points and the HP Envy 17 (2012) by almost 1600 points. The 15R's lofty PCMark7 comes by way of the mSATA drive, which is known to improve performance on this particular test.

Scores from the Cinebench R11.5 benchmark test are not as skewed; the Inspiron 15R Special Edition's score of 5.56 lagged the Lenovo Y580 (6.22) and the Dell 17R Special Edition (6.15) but trounced the second generation Core i5-based Toshiba Qosmio X775-Q7170 (2.70). Dell Inspiron 15R Special Edition (7520)

The 15R Special Edition's Photoshop CS5 (3:34) and Handbrake (1:24) encoding scores are evidence that it can handle your multimedia tasks with relative ease and are right in line with the Y580 and the 17R Special Edition.

Switchable graphics are supplied by a discrete AMD Radeon HD 7730M GPU and the integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 circuitry. The Radeon engine produced solid 3DMark06 scores of 11,185 (1,024-by-768) and 7,897 (1,920-by-1,080) but could not match the Y580's scores of 15,486 (1,024-by-768) and 12,720 (1,920-by-1,080). Results were similar on our Lost Planet 2 DX9 and Crysis DX10 gaming tests; neither laptop hit the 30 fps mark on the high quality tests but the Y580 produced much higher frame rates on the medium quality tests.

The Inspiron 15R Special Edition had trouble completing the MobileMark 2007 battery benchmark test, so we used our comparable 10-hour DVD rundown test to test the 48WHr battery. It lasted 3 hours 10 minutes, which is almost an hour longer than the 2:20 of the Dell Inspiron 17R Special Edition using the same anecdotal test.

The Dell Inspiron 15R Special Edition has a lot going for it. For a little over $1K you get impressive productivity performance, switchable graphics, and a first rate HD display. The addition of a Blu-ray drive sweetens the deal. Its battery life isn't newsworthy but it isn't terrible either, and you can always delete the preinstalled bloatware if it bothers you. That said, as good as the Inspiron 15R's graphics performance is, it can't match the overall graphics power of our reigning Editors' Choice, the Lenovo IdeaPad Y580.

Wall Street opens higher on Europe hopes

By NBC News wire reports

Stocks opened higher on Friday as Spain worked on reform measures in anticipation of a bailout package and Apple debuted its latest iPhone worldwide.

Shares of Apple rose 0.5 percent in early trading.

Spain is considering freezing pensions and speeding up a planned rise in the retirement age as it races to cut spending and meet conditions of an expected international sovereign aid package, Sources with knowledge of the matter said.

"The problems are very big (in Spain and Europe in general), it's possible this is the beginning of the workout of the situation, it certainly takes some pressure off," said Rick Meckler, president LibertyView Capital Management in New York.

"But you can expect - as it's gone on all year - there will be positive and negative news stories out of Europe until Germany makes some firm decision on its level of commitment."

Minutes after the opening bell, the Dow Jones industrial average?was up 28.42 points, or 0.21 percent, at 13,625.35. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 3.74 points, or 0.26 percent, at 1,464.00. The Nasdaq Composite Index?was up 19.09 points, or 0.60 percent, at 3,195.05.

After gaining about 6 percent since the start of August, largely on expectations for new economic stimulus measures by world central banks, the S&P 500 has seen muted action this week. The index has been unable to muster a daily move of more than 0.4 percent in either direction in the wake of the Federal Reserve's latest quantitative easing plan.

There may be increased volatility towards the close Friday due to 'quadruple witching' - the quarterly settlement and expiration of four different types of September equity futures and options contracts. Expiration can lead to greater volume and volatility as players adjust or exercise their derivative positions.

"That has historically been a positive day for the market so you have some people just really looking at that," said Meckler, referring to the quadruple witching.

Minneapolis Fed President Narayana Kocherlakota, who has long argued that pushing too hard to get Americans back to work risks inflation, reversed course and suggested the Fed should keep rates low until the jobless rate drops to 5.5 percent.

Apple's iPhone 5 hits stores around the globe on Friday, giving the consumer giant a boost ahead of the crucial end-of-year holiday season, even as rival Samsung steps up its legal challenge over key technologies.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Quick Study: DASH Diet Works--But Maybe Not for African-Americans

The study: People who stick to the DASH diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) can significantly reduce their blood pressure, a study finds. But the diet may have its limitations?in a clinical trial, African-Americans didn?t stick to it as well as whites did, signaling a need for weight loss plans that take cultural food preferences into consideration.

The study, published online today in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, included 144 sedentary overweight or obese men and women who also had high blood pressure but weren?t taking any medication for it. They were randomly assigned to four months of the DASH diet, the DASH diet plus regular exercise and weight loss counseling, or told to make no lifestyle changes.

Those in the DASH diet plus exercise group lost on average 19 pounds, while the others maintained their weight. The two DASH diet groups also had the biggest declines in blood pressure. But African-Americans had the most trouble sticking to the DASH diet, eating more meat, fat and sweets and less fruit compared with whites.

MORE: The Diet That Trumps Them All

What we already know: The DASH diet, which is big on whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables and lean proteins, has an excellent reputation. It was ranked the best overall diet in this year?s U.S. News and World Report's Best Diets, and was also named the best diet for healthy eating and best diabetes diet. An Archives of Internal Medicine study from 2008 found that the DASH diet was linked with a lower risk of coronary heart disease and stroke in middle-aged women.

What this means for you: In the study, the authors noted that when following a specific diet, it might be a good idea to modify some favorite foods rather than cutting them out altogether. After all, eating is supposed to be pleasurable, even when trying to get healthier. Instead of never eating macaroni and cheese again, find a recipe lower in fat, calories and salt that still tastes good. As the study points out, food is more than nourishment, it?s a part of our cultural identity and sense of community.?

Do you make lower-fat versions of favorite foods to help you stay on a diet? Let us know in the comments.

Police begin enforcing controversial Arizona immigration measure

PHOENIX (Reuters) - Arizona police on Wednesday began enforcing a controversial "show-your-papers" provision of a state law targeting illegal immigration as civil rights groups prepared to document allegations of racial profiling.

Police in the border state with Mexico are now authorized to begin conducting immigration status checks of anyone they stop for any reason and suspect of being in the country illegally after a federal judge on Tuesday lifted an injunction against the provision requiring such checks.

The measure, upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in June, is part of a broad Arizona clampdown on illegal immigration signed into law in 2010 by Republican Governor Jan Brewer, an outspoken foe of President Barack Obama's administration on immigration.

Brewer has said the law was needed because of the federal government's failure to secure the border with Mexico. She said enforcement would be free of any racial profiling.

"It's definitely a new phase, and one where we'll be looking very carefully to monitor for civil rights violations in the state," said Karen Tumlin, managing attorney with the National Immigration Law Center, one of a coalition of groups that challenged the law.

"There is a hotline set up ... where folks can report any violations or questionings or detentions that happen under the law," she added.

The U.S. Supreme Court, in upholding the measure even as it struck down three other Arizona immigration provisions, has left open the door for legal challenges, saying constitutional or other challenges could proceed once the measure took effect.

Rights activists who have fought a two-year legal battle against the measure have said they are ready to go to court quickly if they learn of instances of racial profiling or illegal detention.

Opponents of the measure are also pinning hopes on a legal challenge filed with the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals that seeks an injunction to halt the law's enforcement.

Police in Phoenix and Tucson said they were now enforcing the law, although law enforcement agencies from across the state have said they expect little change in their policing. Police did not specify what enforcement steps officers were taking on patrol.

HOTLINE

Even before the injunction on the measure was lifted, the American Civil Liberties Union said a bilingual hotline on the law had already taken 3,500 calls in Arizona, where nearly a third of the population of 6.5 million is Hispanic.

About 50 activists rallied outside the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, agency offices in central Phoenix later on Wednesday, in a gesture of defiance toward the law.

"The big message is we are not afraid, that undocumented people are here standing outside of ICE and telling everyone that ... we are organized and that we are not going away," said Carlos Garcia, of grass-roots group Puente Arizona. Puente is Spanish for bridge.

In a statement after Tuesday's court ruling, Brewer said police " bring their training and experience to this important task, as well as a solemn commitment to serving the public, protecting our citizens and upholding the law.

"That means all of our laws, including those barring racial profiling or discrimination," she added.

The Obama administration battled the measure on the grounds that it interfered with federal immigration powers, and Arizona was expected to get limited help in enforcing the provision from the federal government.

Amber Cargile, the spokeswoman in Phoenix for ICE, said U.S. Department of Homeland Security officials in Arizona had been told not to respond to police requests relating to immigration enforcement unless it met the government's priorities.

Those include convicted criminals, individuals previously removed from the United States and recent border crossers, she said in a statement.

"DHS will continue to telephonically comply with its legal requirement to verify an individual's immigration status upon request," Cargile said in a statement.

Last year, ICE received about three calls a day to its Phoenix unit seeking verification. Cargile said the agency was receiving a "normal volume" of calls on Wednesday.

Mulberry delivers sweet and sassy London collection

LONDON (Reuters) - British brand Mulberry, a staple of London Fashion Week with its trademark bags, also offered up a collection of sorbet-colored, floral-inspired outfits for spring/summer 2013 on Tuesday.

The collection saw Mulberry go back to its roots, taking inspiration from the rich florals of the English countryside, displaying clothes in delicate shades of peach, mint, and cream, embellished with detailed floral motifs.

Creative director Emma Hill revamped a 1970s silhouette using flowing dresses with low backs and tailored jackets, but introduced a sexy edge with bonded leather. A poodle dog joined the models walking down the runway to lend a vibe of strolling through rural England.

Outerwear was inspired by English country heritage, with models in military peacoats and boxy biker jackets over evening dresses in tan and black leather. Navy prints and jacquard textures, added a twist of whimsy that the brand has become known for.

As always, all eyes were on the accessories as Mulberry debuted its Willow collection of bags and clutches, centered around a tote bag with floral prints and detailed petals added to the postman lock that has become a Mulberry signature.

Classic Mulberry bag collections were also given their own spring/summer 2013 editions, adding a floral motif on leather for the Del Rey named for singer Lana and on artisan woven silk jacquard for the Alexa (socialite Alexa Chung). Both namesakes were on the front row.

The star-studded front row also included supermodel Kate Moss, "Downton Abbey" stars and Olympic heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis.

"It's a great British brand. It's timeless pieces that just go with everything. There's such a variety of colours and styles, it's a brand that I just really love," Ennis told Reuters.

The show was held at London's Claridges Ballroom, which had been transformed into an English country garden, with pastel-colored garden gnomes and wheelbarrows dotted around, accompanied by lush floral hangings. Guests were treated to slices of angel cake and fruit juices.

"It was really cheerful but subtle, it felt like spring but in a quirky, original way," "Downton Abbey" actress Elizabeth McGovern told Reuters after the show, adding that designer Hill brought a "fabulous sense of pattern and cut" to the brand.

'Satanic Verses' author Rushdie dismisses new death threat from religious foundation in Iran

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Salman Rushdie is dismissing the latest threat against his life as just talk.

"This was essentially one priest in Iran looking for a headline," the author of "The Satanic Verses" said Tuesday night as he spoke at a Barnes & Noble in Union Square before about 400 people, some just children when Iran's Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989 declared Rushdie's novel was blasphemous and called for his death.

Iran's government has long since distanced itself from Khomeini's decree, his fatwa, but anti-Rushdie sentiment remains. A semi-official Iranian religious foundation headed by Ayatollah Hassan Saneii has raised the bounty for Rushdie from $2.8 million to $3.3 million after recent protests against an anti-Islamic film that helped lead to riots around the Middle East. But Rushdie, who called the movie "the worst video on YouTube," says Saneii has long offered a bounty and few people have taken him seriously.

Rushdie said the threat was simply the latest product of the "outrage industry" and added that there is "no evidence" of people being interested in the bounty. His concern had been state-sanctioned death squads, "professional killers." But the days of hiding are long over and he is free to walk the streets, stand on line in supermarkets and honour that old publishing ritual ? the author reading.

Rushdie was discussing his memoir about the fatwa, "Joseph Anton," which has just been published to strong reviews and encouraging sales. Security officials were present Tuesday at Barnes & Noble, but precautions were modest enough that Rushdie's appearance was well publicized and you could enter the reading area on the fourth floor without having your bag checked. The greatest deterrent was the weather, whistling winds and pounding rain that at times pressed against the windows just behind Rushdie.

Wearing a grey suit and no tie, the 65-year-old author sounded relieved, gratified and at home. This was a story with a happy ending, he said, although one that he would prefer to relive only on paper. "Joseph Anton" follows the abrupt turns in his life and career, from his swift rise in the early 1980s as the celebrated author of "Midnight's Children" to his sudden notoriety as objections to "The Satanic Verses" intensified from protests to government sanctions. The book is named for the pseudonym Rushdie used while in hiding. Anton was for Anton Chekhov, the "poet of loneliness," and "Joseph" for Joseph Conrad, who penned a motto Rushdie tried to follow: "I must live till I die."

Rushdie made it, but he remembered those who nearly didn't, including the novel's Norwegian publisher, shot three times in the back. That publisher not only pulled through, Rushdie observed, he made sure to order more copies of the book. Rushdie also thanked such loyal friends as Christopher Hitchens and the many booksellers in the U.S. who continued to stock the novel despite bomb threats and real bombs. "This was a shooting war," he said.

As he writes in "Joseph Anton," Rushdie witnessed the very best and worst in people. He remembered being criticized by conservatives and even some liberals for causing his own trouble. Two marriages ended during his decade underground and publishers were reluctant to release the paperback of "Satanic Verses," which became a bestseller for reasons Rushdie never imagined or desired.

"Avoid being condemned to death by the leader of a tyrannical country," he advised the audience Tuesday.

The fatwa turned his life into a novel, a genre novel. Rushdie spoke of having armed policemen in his kitchen, people "licensed to kill." He described streets in Paris cleared by security officials so a car he was in could drive through. And he remembered looking out on a cafe and wishing he could join the drinkers and smokers trying to figure out who was causing the fuss.

He says he's proud of the book and of his fight for a most precious freedom ? freedom of expression. Terrorism is really the art of fear, he explained. "The only way you can defeat it is by deciding not to be afraid."

0 - Malecare's Advanced Prostate Cancer

Off-line I have received a number of additional questions about the use of imaging with c11 choline (see my post at http://advancedprostatecancer.net/?p=3433). The questions ranged from what is c11 choline to how it compares to some of the other more sensitive PET scans contrasts that are being used to identify specific locations of recurrent advanced prostate cancer.

Choline is a naturally occurring B vitamin complex which is necessary for the health of the normal cell structure and signaling; neurotransmitters and for general cell metabolism.

C11 choline is a synthetic version choline that releases beta decay that can be visualized by Positron Emission Tomography, or a PET scan.

Choline is rapidly taken up by prostate cells (contrary to the general impression glucose, which is used in other scans, is not rapidly taken up by prostate cells) and will allow prostate cancer metastasis to be visual.

Since prostate cells metabolize the c11 choline the PET images will show metabolic activity, not structural abnormalities like old bone breaks or arthritis.

The goal of using this type of scan is to determine if a man?s rising PSA after receiving primary treatment is a sign that their cancer is systemic (in this case meaning that that it spread to multiple locations) or is still focal (or just spread to 1 or 2 spots). If the disease is focal there can be a discussion of a treatment approach that could specifically target these prostate cancer spots.

If you do decide to explore c11 choline scans remember that like other scans it does have a high rate of false positives, so any treatment plan should include confirmation that the ?hot spots? are in fact advanced prostate cancer metastasis.

There are other non-FDA approved scan contrasts that are also being used in various places in the United States. They include [18F]fluoroethylcholine-based PET/CT scans and Feraheme-based MRIs, however like the c11 choline scans they are not fool proof.

Unfortunately, current technology remains lacking. There is no imaging test today that has been shown to to have really high accuracy. Despite this, in some men, these scans are able to identify recurrent micro-metastasis in some men with early forms of prostate cancer recurrences.
