How LinkedIn Groups Can Help Your Social Media Strategy - Add Me!

What separates LinkedIn from the other major players in social media (Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest) is that it is a social network created for business networking purposes. People visit the other social networks for a variety of reasons, but people that log in to LinkedIn do so with business in mind. For a business, specifically a B2B, LinkedIn efforts can be much more beneficial because there is less noise to compete with and users are much more focused.

LinkedIn provides a lot of value to businesses and individuals that are willing to put the time and effort in to use it correctly. The first step is to set up a complete business profile and encourage all employees to have up to date profiles too. Unfortunately many businesses never move past this first step. Like any other social network, the key to success on LinkedIn is to be active and share with connections and other LinkedIn users. If you aren?t an active member of the community, there is a smaller chance that your business or services will be found by potential prospects and you will lose out on opportunities. Perhaps one of the best ways to get found on LinkedIn is to join groups and become an active member.

There are thousands of groups on LinkedIn, and you are allowed to join up to 50. Unless you have a large social media staff that can keep you active and involved in all 50, it?s probably not realistic to join that many. The best groups to join are the ones that are most related to your business or niche and don?t have too many members. It?s OK to join a few groups with thousands of members, but it?s just a lot harder to get noticed in these groups. By joining smaller communities (a few hundred members), it?s easier to gain visibility. It?s also important to join groups that have an active community. If nobody is posting or sharing with one another and the group has become inactive, look for other opportunities.

Once you?ve joined some groups, be sure to visit them at least a few times a week to look for an opportunity to share your knowledge and get noticed. Browse through the discussions within the group and see if there is anything that you can add. Take the same approach that you would take with blog commenting. Don?t simply write something like, ?I agree.? Instead, take the time to write a thoughtful comment that takes a stance on a subject and proves that you have expertise in the area. Feel free to start your own discussion if there is a current topic that isn?t being discussed yet.

Remember, LinkedIn isn?t just for the HR department to post job openings. It?s a great strategy to get all of your team members active on LinkedIn. Because it?s a place for business to be conducted, some great networking opportunities can arise as long as LinkedIn is being used correctly.

John Rosatti: Classic Car Restoration

If you have been dreaming of owning one of your favorite classic cars from years ago for some time now, you should consider restoring your very own custom build hot rod or muscle car like John Rosatti, which can be a very rewarding project that will have some excellent results in the end. If you would like a custom built car that features custom designs that you have always wanted then you should think about restoring your very own classic car.

Restoring your classic car will not only get you a lot of extra looks from spectators but it can also provide you with a great investment that will be worth a lot of money if you should ever decide to part with it, notes John Rosatti. Restoring a classic car will require a lot of time, money, skills, knowledge and patience. If you are doing the restoration job on your own then you will also need special tools in order to do the job correctly. All throughout the restoration process it will be essential to tag the parts of the classic car that needs to be restored so that you will be able to go into the project with a more systematic approach.

When restoring a classic car the major part that you will be working with is the engine. The engine is known for being the heart of the car so it is recommended that a certified mechanic look at the engine especially if you are new to working on cars. Once the engine is able to start smoothly you can work on making the car look its very best by steam washing the compartment section of the engine and also repaint it. The gearbox as well as the transmission are the second most important parts of the car that need to be checked and restored, changing the oil that is located inside of the transmission is suggested. Next, explains John Rosatti, you will need to take care of the body panels; all rusty and damaged parts should be replaced.

You should always check the car windows for any cracks and need to replace the windows if necessary. It is best to get brand new windows from an authorized automotive glass shop for the best restoration. Restoring your classic car can be a painstakingly hard job especially when you have to deal with brand new mechanical parts, however once you have restored your classic the pure satisfaction and joy that you receive as the end result will be hard to describe and resist.

Restoring a classic car can be a very complex job which is why many people seek out assistance from professionals when it comes to the difficult areas of the job. You can find classic car restoration service providers in your area by looking then up online and finding a service provider nearest you. You may want to call around and interview the service providers before you make a final decision on which repair center you would like to go with. Keep in mind that getting a good deal does not always mean that you will receive quality service so make your decision wisely.

Trial delayed for father of missing Iowa girl

By Louis Casiano, NBC News

The father of one of two missing Iowa girls will have his trial on?drug and domestic abuse charges delayed for one month, the Des Moines Register reported.

Daniel Morrissey was scheduled to stand trial Tuesday, but District Judge Andrea Dryer pushed the date back to Aug. 28.

Charlie Neibergall / AP file

Dryer told Morrissey she understood why he has not been able to prepare his defense in light of the events involving the disappearance of his 10-year-old daughter, Lyric?Cook-Morrissey, and her 8-year-old cousin, Elizabeth Collins.

?

?

The delay comes one week after a judge put Morrissey under pretrial supervision at the request of prosecutors.?

The cousins have been missing since July 13 when they went for a bike ride near Meyers Lake in Evansdale. Their bikes and a purse were found near the lake.

Morrissey and his wife,?Misty, stopped cooperating with investigators because of aggressive questioning by police, the Register reported, quoting a family member.

Authorities?have said that the parents are not considered suspects.

Police now say missing Iowa girls abducted?

After an FBI dive team failed to locate the girls in the lake last week, their disappearance was reclassified an abduction.

The newspaper reported?that investigators believe the girls are still alive.?

Romney small business backers accept government help also ...

Posted on: 7:55 pm, July 26, 2012, by Alix Bryan and Sam Brock, updated on: 07:28am, July 27, 2012

RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR)?In the midst of a Romney campaign offensive targeting President Obama?s recent remarks about entrepreneurs, CBS 6 has learned several of the local businesses highlighted in the campaign have benefited from government assistance.

?When I heard the ?you didn?t build that comment? on television, I thought I surely must have misheard something,? said Richmond small business owner Melissa Ball at a stump event this week. ?President Obama is wrong- Americans do build their own businesses, and we deserve a president who believes that as well.?

Republicans have keyed in on Mr. Obama?s remarks- offered during a July 13 speech in Roanoke- that tied small business success to a combination of personal ingenuity and government assistance.

Ball criticized the president for shortchanging small business owners, who she believes thrive on business acumen, will and savvy- not government aid.

Yet public records indicate that Ball received a $52,000 government contract for her office supply business, Ball Office Products, in 2001. She also secured an SBA-backed loan of $635,000 earlier this year, according to the web site Usaspending.gov.

Ball did not return several phone calls from CBS 6 on Thursday.

At the Romney Victory Headquarters in Fredericksburg, VA, the Republican Party Victory Chairman Pete Snyder responded to questions about whether Ball, and other business owners critical of President Obama who?ve accepted government loans and contracts, are hypocrites.

?Money doesn?t magically appear from Washington D.C.,? said Snyder, ?it comes from the pockets of every single person in America, and it?s fueled mostly by entrepreneurs. So how is that hypocritical??

Snyder drew a clear distinction between believing in a ?limited role for government,? and taking issue with the president?s comments.

?I think it?s terrific we have the SBA,? declared Snyder. ?But government doesn?t create business, entrepreneurs do!?

State Delegate Chris Head, R-Roanoke, owns two offices of ?Home Instead Senior Care,? a national franchise with more than 900 locations throughout the country.

On Wednesday, the Romney camp used Head?s Roanoke office for one of its 24 ?We Did Build This? campaign events.

Head acknowledged to CBS 6 by phone Thursday that he?s used SBA-backed loans, and that a small portion of his revenue?less than 10 percent- comes from government contracts with the Department of Veteran Affairs.

But Head vehemently disagreed that his use of government loans or contracts undermines his criticism of the president.

?The only thing an SBA loan does is give you, in essence, a co-signer so that if everything goes south, and everything is liquidated, including the personal assets of the person who took out the loan, then the government might be able to step in and repay that,?said Head.

He called reaction to the president?s ?you didn?t build that? remarks among the small business community one of ?universal disdain? and a slap in the face.

Democrats, on the other hand, believe their Republican counterparts are missing the point.

?There were 18 tax cuts that have helped small businesses under the Obama Administration,? said Delegate Jennifer McClellan, D-Henrico, ?and stimulus money has helped some small business owners gain access to capital that they otherwise wouldn?t have received.?

With regard to business owners receiving government loans and contracts, McClellan added, ?I think they would have to admit that?s helped them along the way.?

Few think sluggish US economy will strengthen soon

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A U.S. economy that plodded along in the first three months of the year likely grew even less in the April-June quarter. And most economists no longer think growth will strengthen much in the second half of 2012.

Weaker hiring, nervous consumers, sluggish manufacturing and the overhang of Europe's debt crisis might be pointing toward everyone's big fear: another recession.

Against that background, the government on Friday will issue its first of three estimates of how much the U.S. economy expanded last quarter. The consensus forecast is that growth slowed to an annual rate of 1.5 percent, according to a survey of economists by data firm FactSet. The Commerce Department will issue the estimate at 8:30 a.m. EDT.

A quarterly growth rate of 1.5 percent would be the weakest in a year. It would follow a meager 1.9 percent rate in the first three months of 2012.

Much more growth would be needed to fuel stronger hiring. Economists generally say even 2 percent annual growth would add only about 90,000 jobs a month. That's too few to drive down the unemployment rate, which is stuck at 8.2 percent.

The U.S. economy has never been so sluggish this long into a recovery. The Great Recession officially ended in June 2009.

Until a few weeks ago, many economists had been predicting that growth would accelerate in the final six months of the year. They pointed to gains in manufacturing, home and auto sales and lower gas prices.

But threats to the U.S. economy have left consumers ? who account for about 70 percent of the economy ? too anxious to spend freely. Jobs are tight. Pay isn't keeping up with inflation. Retail sales fell in June for a third straight month. Manufacturing has weakened in most areas of the country.

Fear is also growing that the economy will fall off a "fiscal cliff" at year's end. That's when tax increases and deep spending cuts will take effect unless Congress reaches a budget agreement.

All that is making companies reluctant to expand and hire much.

From April through June, U.S. job growth slowed to 75,000 a month, down from a healthy 226,000 average in the first three months of the year.

"The European situation has been getting worse and is dragging down the global economy," said Sung Won Sohn, an economics professor at California State University. "And we have got the fiscal cliff to worry about in the United States."

Six of the 17 countries that use the euro currency are in recession. Growth has also weakened in powerhouse emerging markets in China, India and Brazil. With these economies slowing, so is their demand for U.S. exports.

Sohn estimates the likelihood of a U.S. recession within the next 12 months at 30 percent to 35 percent. That's up from his estimate of 20 percent six months ago.

Nariman Behravesh, chief economist at IHS Global Insight, puts the chance of a recession at 25 percent. He expects growth to increase slightly to an annual rate above 2 percent in the second half of this year.

Other economists are gloomier. They think growth will muddle along below 2 percent through 2012.

Many economists think consumers pulled back sharply on spending last quarter. Analysts at JPMorgan estimate that consumer spending grew at a scant 1 percent annual pace in the April-June period, down from a 2.5 percent annual increase in the first quarter.

"Businesses and consumers are quite worried, so they're holding back," Behravesh said. "For consumers, the worry is the jobs markets. Businesses are worried about Europe. And China is looking weaker than most of us would have thought even a few months ago."

Behravesh said even companies that think Congress will manage to reach a budget deal by year's end are too uncertain about possible tax changes to step up hiring.

"That is making them very cautious about investment decisions," he said.

In delivering the Federal Reserve's midyear economic report to Congress last week, Chairman Ben Bernanke sketched a bleak picture. And he warned that unless lawmakers strike a deal, the tax increases and deep spending cuts that will take effect Jan. 1 could trigger another U.S. recession.

Bernanke has said the Fed is prepared to take further action if unemployment stays high. He hasn't specified what steps it might take or whether any action is imminent.

The lackluster economy is also raising pressure on President Barack Obama in his re-election fight with Mitt Romney, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.

But few think the Fed, the White House or Congress can or will do anything soon that might rejuvenate the economy quickly. Many lawmakers, for example, refuse to increase federal spending in light of historically large budget deficits.

"There is nothing out there to light a fire under the economy," said Joel Naroff, chief economist at Naroff Economic Advisors.

Each week Joshua Fruhlinger contributes This is the Modem World, a column dedicated to exploring the culture of consumer technology.

DNP This is the Modem World So what's with the tech backlash thing

Just over a month ago, Apple launched its svelte new MacBook Pro with Retina display. Powerful and beautiful, we all fell in love with the new device, jammed up Apple's ordering process, and prepared to queue up for a hot new Mac all over again.

Then we woke a day later to a slew of realizations: the unit is hard to upgrade, software isn't optimized for the new display, and repairs will be expensive, if not impossible. Then we heard that some Retina screens were having color issues. So we rioted. We hated it for being limited, for not being the sexy woman she promised she was the night before.

Anti-matter universe sought by space-based detector

GENEVA | Thu Jul 26, 2012 9:06am EDT

GENEVA (Reuters) - A seven metric ton particle detector parked for over a year on the International Space Station (ISS) aims to establish whether there is an unseen "dark universe" woven into the cosmos, the scientist leading the project said on Wednesday.

And the detector, the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer or AMS, has already broken all records in registering some 17 billion cosmic rays and storing data on them for analysis, Nobel physics laureate Samuel Ting told a news conference.

"The question is: where is the universe made from anti-matter?" said Ting. "It could be out there somewhere far away producing particles that we could detect with the AMS."

Physicists say that the event 13.7 billion years ago that brought the known universe into existence and has been dubbed the "Big Bang" must have created equal amounts of matter and anti-matter. But then anti-matter largely disappeared.

Why that happened is one of the great mysteries of the cosmos which are being investigated through the AMS and scientific analysts back on the ground at CERN, the European particle physics research center where Ting spoke.

The purpose of the AMS program, he said, "is to search for phenomena that so far we have not had the imagination or the technology to discover".

Some researchers have suggested that the invisible "dark matter" estimated to make up about 25 percent of the known universe could be linked to anti-matter, but others say that is highly unlikely.

WAFTING VEIL

These scientists argue that anti-matter could not survive in the close proximity to parts of the visible cosmos that latest observations suggest dark matter occupies - sometimes like a wafting veil between planets and stars.

Matter and anti-matter are almost identical, with the same mass but opposite spin and energy charges. They can form separate parts of some elementary particles but if they are mixed together they are both destroyed instantaneously.

Ting was speaking at a news conference with a team of U.S. astronauts who took the detector, which was developed and built at CERN, up to the ISS in May last year on the last mission of the U.S. space shuttle Endeavour.

He said that so far the $2 billion detector, with its powerful magnets that bend particles with positive and negative charges in different directions, had functioned perfectly and not one of its multiple backup systems had been needed so far.

Ting, a 75-year-old professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston, supervises the research on the material gathered from the AMS from CERN, guiding a team of some 500 scientists in many countries, including Russia and China.

He is however cautious about how long it will take for real discoveries to compare with the sighting announced this month of a totally new particle, believed to be the long-sought Higgs Boson, in CERN's Large Hadron Collider.

The boson is part of a force called the Higgs Field that turned the minute pieces of flying debris after the Big Bang into solid matter, bringing them together to form galaxies, stars and planets, and later life.

Asked when he expected to be able to report the first indications of dark matter or of an anti-matter mirror universe, Ting replied: "As late as possible," explaining that the analysis had to be done scrupulously and "step by step".

It would be at least 50 years "before anyone would be foolish enough to launch an experiment like this again" now that the U.S. space program was shut down and current Chinese and Russian spacecraft could not take a load like the AMS, he said.

Ron Howard: What I learned from Andy Griffith

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

Director?and actor Ron Howard, who was just 5 when he first played Sheriff Andy Taylor's son, Opie, on "The Andy Griffith Show," talked to msnbc's Andrea Mitchell Tuesday about Griffith's death.

Howard, who went on to play Richie Cunningham on "Happy Days" and then to an acclaimed directorial career in the movies, said that Griffith "created an environment on that set that was very creative, very playful, but extremely disciplined."

Griffith's character evolved from a broader country-bumpkin type into a more nuanced man as the show progressed, Howard told Mitchell.

"The character became a much greater reflection of Andy," he said, noting that as a child actor he was allowed to witness discussions of which jokes were appropriate for the characters and which jokes "were perhaps undercutting the integrity of the characters."

Howard said that on his own films he tries to create a comfortable setting where actors and crew can feel confident and?do their best possible work, and says, "Without getting up and making speeches, I try to create that environment, as Andy did."

The actor and director also said he hopes fans will remember?the star's?entire body of work, including not just "The Andy Griffith Show," but 1980s legal drama "Matlock," the 1957 movie "A Face in the Crowd," and his music, for which Griffith won a Grammy.

"There's a reason that he's so impactful in so many different?mediums and styles," Howard told Mitchell. "And that's because he cared about what he was doing."

Share your memories of Andy Griffith's many roles on Facebook.

Reports: Barclays chairman to resign this week

(AP) ? Two British media outlets are reporting that the chairman of U.K.-based Barclays bank plans to resign this week following the scandal regarding the manipulation of data by his bank.

The Guardian newspaper and the BBC reported Sunday that Marcus Agius will step down after having served as Barclays' chairman for about 6 years.

U.S. and British agencies imposed fines totaling $453 million on Barclays last week for submitting false data used in setting the London interbank offer rate, LIBOR, a key market index, between 2005 and 2009. The bank submitted that data to make its financial position appear stronger.

The Guardian and BBC did not explain whether Agius was linked to the scandal.

Barclays declined to comment.
