Mothers of Kids With Autism Earn Less, Study Shows

MONDAY, March 19 (HealthDay News) -- Mothers of children with autism and autism spectrum disorders earn significantly less than what mothers of children who have no health limitations earn, a new study has found.

These moms even earn less than mothers of children with other health limitations.

Mothers of children with autism earned, on average, less than $21,000 a year, the researchers found. That was 56 percent less than mothers whose children had no health limitations and 35 percent less than mothers whose children had other health limitations.

In addition, moms who have children with autism are 6 percent less likely to be employed, and work an average of seven hours less per week than mothers of children with no health limitations, the study found.

While the researchers did not find differences in fathers' incomes, the overall income in families that have children with autism suffers, said lead researcher David Mandell, associate director of the Center for Autism Research at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and associate director of the Center for Mental Health Policy and Services Research at the University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia.

"Families of children with autism experience a 28 percent reduction in income compared to families with typically developing children," he said. The family incomes of parents whose children have autism is also less, 21 percent, than those whose children have other health limitations, Mandell found.

The study is published online March 19 and in the April print issue of Pediatrics.

For the study, Mandell and his colleagues looked at data from the 2002-2008 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey. This ongoing survey of U.S. households collects detailed information on medical conditions, health services use and expenditure, and other data.

The researchers looked at 261 children with autism spectrum disorders, nearly 3,000 with other health limitations and more than 64,000 with no health limitations.

About 67 percent of the children with autism had mothers who worked outside the home. About 92 percent of the kids with autism had working fathers.

Autism spectrum disorders now affect about one in 110 children in the United States. The spectrum includes a range of neurodevelopmental disorders, all marked by difficulties in social and communication skills and repetitive behaviors.

A mother may cut back work hours or drop out of the workforce to help supervise their child's care, including advocating for services, according to the researchers.

The costs of caring for children with other disabilities is about 5 percent to 12 percent of family income, the researchers noted, citing other research.

The researchers didn't have information on how severe the autism was in each case, so Mandell couldn't say if costs are more or go up if the autism is more severe.

The findings don't surprise Dr. Andrew Adesman, chief of developmental and behavioral pediatrics at the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Children's Medical Center of New York.

"Basically, autism is taking a double toll," he said. Besides the increased costs for health care and other services, the reduced earnings also have an impact, Adesman pointed out.

Parents can and should reach out for help, the experts stressed.

"Take advantage of services available," Adesman said.

For example, Mandell noted, a parent group in Philadelphia will send someone knowledgeable to go with a parent of a child with autism to the school meeting to develop the educational plan.

Peter Bell, executive vice president for services and programs for Autism Speaks, an advocacy group, said the task of caring for a child with autism can be daunting.

"The study isn't surprising for families who live with autism every day," he said. "When their child is diagnosed with autism, it is a game changer."

The Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning, has said the salary demand by Polytechnic Teachers Association of Ghana (POTAG) was disproportionate with existing economic figures.

The Ministry said the POTAG request would result in detrimental fiscal implications, besides the possibility of sparking off further labour agitations in other sub-sectors of the public service.

These were contained in a statement issued by the Public Affairs Directorate of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) in Accra on Friday.

However, it said the FWSC had concluded discussions with POTAG on their market premium, a monetary award to attract and retain skills in short supply.

The previous gap of market premium between polytechnic lecturers and university lecturers before the discussions was 55 per cent.

The ideal gap between them, considering all factors involving the differences between Universities and Polytechnics, is suggested to be around 20 per cent, however by the end of the discussions, FWSC had closed the gap to 11.2 per cent.

This also implies that the implementation will take retrospective effect, with payments of arrears all the way from January, 2010 for POTAG members.

When discussions on the subject commenced earlier on, POTAG proposed a market premium of 125 per cent, which placed them above the market premium of mainstream universities.

The FWSC counter-proposed 60 per cent, and after lengthy deliberations between the two parties, the FWSC fully stretched its mandate and finally offered a market premium of 90 per cent as against a minuscule move from 125 per cent to 114 per cent by POTAG.

POTAG turned down FWSC?s 90 per cent market premium, insisting that the Commission?s offer does not totally close the gap between them and the universities.

Documentation made available to FWSC by the National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE), indicates that there is clear difference between a polytechnic and a university in Ghana.

Consequently, the two cannot be at par with respect to the components of their remunerations.

In the meantime, FWSC has earlier bridged the existing gap of disparity between the Polytechnics and Universities by granting a grading structure for POTAG Senior Academic Members which is at par with the University Senior Academic Members.

This was done cognizant of the need to maintain the integrity of the Polytechnics in terms of its ability to attract the needed skills to achieve its mandate, and to prevent seepage of teachers to the Universities.

In the case of the alleged delay in migration of POTAG members onto the Single Spine Salary Structure,? polytechnic teachers had reached an understanding with the FWSC to wait until university teachers were migrated.

Goldman to review rules on conflicts of interest

NEW YORK (AP) ? Goldman Sachs, the investment bank blistered by a resigning employee this week for how it does business, said Friday that it will try to strengthen internal rules to prevent questions about conflicts of interest.

A Delaware judge almost killed a deal between two energy companies last month because Goldman had ties to both parties: The bank collected a fee for advising one company, and a Goldman banker owned stock in the other.

Goldman was stung Wednesday by an Op-Ed article published in The New York Times by a young banker who was quitting the company. He accused Goldman executives of privately insulting clients and not acting in customers' best interest.

The bank did not offer specifics Friday on the review of its policies.

The energy deal was a $21 billion buyout of El Paso, a Houston natural gas and oil company, by Kinder Morgan, a Houston natural gas pipeline company. The judge ultimate allowed the deal.

Goldman collected a fee for advising El Paso on the deal. The judge criticized Goldman for failing to disclose that one of its lead bankers on the team, Steve Daniel, personally owned $340,000 of Kinder Morgan stock.

People like Daniel "get paid the big money because they are masters of economic incentives, and keenly aware of them at all times," said the Delaware judge, Chancellor Leo Strine.

Goldman had disclosed other conflicts: Its private-equity arm owned a stake in Kinder Morgan, and it controlled two seats on Kinder Morgan's board.

"We regret that El Paso's board wasn't aware," said David Wells, a spokesman at Goldman. "We are reviewing our policies and procedures with the goal of strengthening them."

The judge noted that Goldman CEO Lloyd Blankfein had called El Paso's CEO, Doug Foshee, and read from a script prepared by Daniel, the banker, that began, "Hello, Doug ? it's been a long time since we have had the chance to visit."

In a footnote, the judge said the script had the "troubling side effect" of reminding his staff of the treacly 1980s love song "Hello," by Lionel Richie.

The Op-Ed by the young banker, Greg Smith, caught fire online. On Friday, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg visited Goldman headquarters to voice his support. He called the scathing public resignation "ridiculous."

Adjusting the levels of neuropeptide Y in people may alter their addictive behavior?which is exactly what the UCSF team observed in the fruit flies.

The experiments, described this week in the journal Science,started with male fruit flies placed in a container with either virgin female flies or female flies that had already mated. A former postdoctoral researcher at UCSF, Shohat-Ophir is now a research specialist at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Janelia Farm Research Center in Ashburn, VA. Later this year, Heberlein will also move to Janelia Farm, where she will become scientific program director.

Experiments Began as a ?Crazy? Idea

When the work first started a few years ago, Shohat-Ophir said, it was just a crazy idea. The UCSF team suspected there might be a molecular mechanism in the brain linking social experiences like sexual rejection to psychological states such as depression of the brain system that responds to rewards. So they decided to test whether flies that were rejected sexually would be more prone to drinking.

Flies in the laboratory will normally drink to intoxication if given the choice, but this behavior is altered when neuropeptide F levels are altered in their brains because of their sexual experiences. Mated flies are less likely to seek out such rewarding experiences.

Arizona Public Service said Monday that a breaker on an electrical line opened, causing a big flash and a brief power outage.

APS officials say an employee came forward last weekend and informed them of the breaker opening that caused no damage to equipment and no power line replacement.

The ball of light that looked like an explosion was captured by a traffic camera on Interstate 17 around 4:45 a.m. last Thursday.

It happened to be broadcast by KSAZ-TV when the station showed footage of the roadway during a report on the morning's commute.

But until now, nobody could identify the flash's source.
